California bans gay marriage: Activists in liberal state stunned as judges uphold 'people's will'

California's top court last night backed the will of the people and banned gay marriage.

The ruling, upholding the result of a state-wide referendum, came as a major blow to the state's reputation as a liberal trendsetter.

Daily Mail

The pro gay marriage movement couldn't even get gay marriage voted in in the most liberal state in the USA.

A reasonable conclusion would be that rather than "Right Wing Christians on ATS" being the people who don't support gay marriage, it is just the every day, normal people who don't.

I've been observing this thread since the beginning and it's quite interesting what has happened since this thread was started. First, it was a calm, rational discussion with viewpoints from both sides. Then, that turned into some of the pro-gay marriage crowd overreacting and saying things about how people should "stay out of my bedroom" and "who are they to tell us who we can and can't be with?" even though the thread topic had nothing to do with either one of those things. Then, that turned into some of the pro-gay marriage crowd resorting to personal attacks, name calling and purely overcharged emotional reactions which has blown this all out of proportion entirely.

IMO, just from watching this thread and trying to take in everyone's viewpoint, I find that the pro-gay marriage crowd is doing a good job of alienating me. I don't even feel like it's a discussion anymore, it's more like an attempted force feeding and you know what that's going to get you? The exact opposite reaction. I think that stuff makes your cause look bad if some can't even reel in their emotions for five minutes and participate in a rational discussion about a topic that is important to many on this thread. The name calling and all is just bad and so are the personal attacks. The only ones judging are the ones accusing, they know who they are in this thread.

I've watched many threads go from civil, intelligent discussion right into a war of words and mod intervention to close the thread. This one is getting close to that, so can't you guys play nice? All this over a word. It all seems so silly. Homosexuals have equal rights pertaining to this, but that's not really what you're after since it's already been done. The ONLY difference is "marriage" vs. "civil union". That's it and this is what the conversation turns into? No wonder we can't get anything done in this country. People can't stop hating others long enough to be productive in important discussions. I feel like I'm being turned away from the pro camp at this point since *some* of you can't control your emotions long enough to properly convey what you're even trying to say. It just makes your side look silly, I'm sorry, but it does and it gives me no pleasure to say that.
edit on 26-3-2012 by Kratos1220 because: correction

It gets personal because it affects people personally. Unless you are against it in which case it doesn't affect you in the slightest and are just trying to protect your own version of what you think life and marriage are.

Must make them feel like big tough people to have control of others like that.

Gay marriage thrown out by all 31 U.S. states where it has been put to vote

Voters in the U.S. state of Maine yesterday rejected a law allowing same-sex 'marriage'.

It means such unions have now been refused in all 31 states where the issue has been put directly to the electorate.

Voters have rejected gay marriage in 31 states.

Where is the suport for gay marriage that the pro-gay pressure groups make so much noise about?

That's funny, because earlier in this thread, one of the mods here who is homosexual came right out and said just that. He said that homosexuals already have equal rights on this topic and that this whole debate over what it's called is silly. So, is he anti-gay? See, it's remarks like that. I have said nothing to suggest I am "anti-gay" and, as a matter of fact, have said quite the opposite earlier in the thread.

So then, are you now bullying me or is your side allowed to bully?

Yet, it is the minority who are trying to dicate to the majority by attmepting to force everyone to change the tradtional definition of marriage to include same sex unions.

Gays already have equal rights with gay civil unions. That apparently isn't enough. We are now expected to change the legal meaning of the word marriage to please them.

Well the member is obviously revelling in being able to control others so I would imagine they're feeling very good about themselves.

Seeking clarification of a post doesn't make a member stupid at all.

I'm saying that it seems that particular member is happy to control others by arguing to disallow a harmless freedom by branding it harmful and appearing as chuffed with themselves as a schoolyard bully after a punch up where the smaller kid gets a bloody nose.

Forget mother and father: 'Parents could be re-named Progenitors A and B' under plans for gay marriage

Parents could be legally referred to as 'Progenitor A' and 'Progenitor B' under plans for same sex marriage, regardless of their sexuality, it has been claimed.

A leading lawyer said, if the institution of marriage is redefined, the erosion of traditional words such as 'mother' and 'father' from British law could have 'Orwellian' consequences.

He said analysis of other countries which had already legalised same sex marriage had shown erosion of traditional words in statute, such as 'mother', 'father', 'wife' and 'husband'

Writing in the Telegraph, Lord Brennan - who is also the president of the Catholic Union of Great Britain - used Spain as a recent example, where the Socialist government introduced gay marriage in 2005.

He wrote: 'The following year it was announced that Spanish birth certificates would read "Progenitor A" and "Progenitor B" instead of "mother" and "father"

'This kind of language is Orwellian. Can we really expect the same kind of thing here if marriage is redefined?'

Daily Mail

An end to 'mother' and 'father' and in with "Progenitor A" and "Progenitor B"?

You pro-gay marriage activists like to portray yourselves as victims, don't you.

I have never met a group of 'victims' before who are so eager to slander, bully and attack anyone who disgrees with them.

Is this man not a real victim of homosexual rights?

Earl banned from holding weddings at his 600-year-old castle for refusing to allow a gay marriage

An Earl has been banned from holding weddings at his 600-year-old castle after refusing to allow a gay marriage.

The Earl of Devon, Hugh Courtenay, has had the licence to hold civil ceremonies at Powderham Castle near Exeter revoked by Devon County Council.

It is thought to be the first case of its kind in the country since the introduction of civil partnerships last year.

Hey, dont have a go at me if common sense isn't being used. I am concerned with one thing and there is no reason that we cannot use common sense in it's implementation.

If it turned out that the world would end or society would collapse I would back right away and never say another word about it but the world will not end because of it and society will not collapse.

You are concerned with people not being allowed to do things such as this guy in his castle or people having to do things such as christians marrying gays in church.

Surely we can excercise common sense when new laws are introduced?

You're attacking the wrong thing.

No different then the KKK in the south pushing their belief on blacks.

Well - - we know what direction that went in Civil Rights. And Gay Civil Rights - - is moving forward.

Can't change Bigoted Bullies lack of brains - - - but One-by-One laws will be changed to ensure full legal rights for Gays as well.

Some people are just lazy and don't go out and vote on the issue. It's the haters that come out to vote against it. They think they have more "to lose", so they're more active. The masses who don't care if gays get married, don't really have anything to lose either way, so they don't go out to vote.

Interracial marriages were also rejected in the majority of states, until a case reached the U.S. Supreme Court. The SC ruled that it was unconstitutional to ban interracial marriage, so all states were forced to allow it. Did America come to an end after that? Nope.

I hope Newt's little new trophy wife leaves his racist, homophobic ways after she finds out he disowned his own sister for being a lesbian. I hope you right wingers are happy now, running to a judge and paying him off worked to your advantage in california. But come november Obama will STILL be president, newt just opened his racist remarking mouth about the trayvon case, couldn't help himself, this for sure WILL cost him the nomination. I noticed Mitt had the decency to not back newts racist remarks. To think this is what becomes of the soo called Land of the free, home of the brave...... it is NOT. Not when you have racist, homophobic WRONG wingers running to pay off judges so they can have their selfish, self centered, self absorbed, homophobic, treasonous way. It just goes to show WRONG wingers bow to the "church" who helped them rig prop 8. At least JP Morgan stood its ground and TERMINATED all the "vatican's" accounts they had.

Tory MPs threaten to sabotage Cameron’s plan to legalise gay weddings as it will 'weaken institution of marriage'

PM could face rebellion from more than 100 MPs

David Cameron today faced the prospect of his biggest ever backbench rebellion over his plans to legalise gay marriage.

Conservative MPs are threatening a protest even bigger than that against the PM's EU veto following the Coalition's plan to lift the ban on civil marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

Opponents claim more than 100 Tory backbenchers could oppose gay marriage, although MPs will be encouraged to support the Prime Minister, according to the Independent.

Daily Mail

Are you suggesting that 100 Tory MPs are members of the KKK?
