Facebook removes page paying homage to Toulouse killer

Facebook on Thursday removed a page that paid homage to the young Frenchman who died in a shootout with police after killing seven people, officials said.

French interior ministry officials said the ministry had asked the social networking site to remove the page that went up shortly after Mohamed Merah was killed earlier Thursday in Toulouse.

The page, which bore a picture of the self-proclaimed Al-Qaeda militant and was titled "Homage to Mohamed Merah", was consulted by more than 500 people before it was removed just hours after it appeared, they said.

Many visitors left comments that were hostile to the police or favourable to Islamic extremism.

www.france24.com...

This is sick. A facebook page honoring an Al-Qaeda murderer who goes around shooting children.

What is wrong with these people?

If they hate the West so much, why do they choose to live here?

What do you have against small Jewish children?

I knew that someone would come along and defend the right of a murderer of small children to have a tribute page.

Has nothing to do with freedom of speech or small Jewish children. It likely violated the TOS and was therefore removed. Not 100% sure about this but Facebook is a private company and can remove pages as they please/as their members flag as violation of TOS/general decorum.

Peace.

So because I support someones right to free speech I automatically agree with them?

Just to clarify I was talking about the OP's comments not the actions of facebook.

I agree but it doesn't surprise me

What is wrong with these people?

Which people....the 500 people that commented on that facebook page?

If they hate the West so much, why do they choose to live here?

How do you know where they live, these 500 people posting on a facebook page?

Just saying...

Peace

During WWII, were Nazis given columns in US newspapers, on the grounds of 'free speech'?

Militant Islam is fighting a war against the West.

Why afford them propaganda opportunities?

good common sense! good to see it used now and again.

Facebook has a great responsibility now, to ensure freedom of speech but at the same time respect common sense.

Facebook/twitter/Google/Youtube are all now working for the state, hence the monopoly where Google ends up on 90% of all sites and basicly run the web.

Anyone here that thinks they have their finger on the trigger and does not vist the Tor Network need to do a little research because the net is going underground.

As it is too many .onion sites are used by perverts but they are being removed slowly and Tor realy is starting to flower.

If I was supporting the murder of Muslim French soldiers and Jewish children, I would be banned from this site.

This site has some standards. So does facebook.

Do you?

Yet it is acceptable to support the murder of Iranian, Iraqi, Libyan soldiers and children?

Are there facebook pages glorifying people who murder Iranian, Iraqi, Libyan soldiers and children?

Never mind the non existant facebook pages that only exist in your imagination. Who has been murdering Iranians?

Did we all miss that?

That is just social media for you. I remember when people were putting up support pages for Raoul Moat. The guy who shot 3 people in 2 days in 2010. I just couldn't understand it. But there are weird people out there with warped perspectives of reality. At least the page was removed, but that does not remove the sentiment that some people have.

Looking at his username and troll posts in this thread, I'd say don't rise to his trolling, ignore him and his kind, they will go away.

How have I trolled here? I never said I supported the notion; I just respect everyone’s right to freedom of speech.
That doesn’t mean everyone can say anything as long as you think it’s right.
It means everyone can say whatever the flying flamingo they want.

If appears you unable to see the difference between support for the US, Israeli and UK army, or for that matter the Iranian, Egyptian or Iraqi army and supporting a Jihadi terrorist who executes small children.

If your point is he killed children so do the armies that you have mentioned, on a much larger scale.
