The threat was possible death. He responded in kind.
It is really annoying to see people who act as if they would take a beating and remain calm and just accept it up until a certain point. It would be hard to determine what danger you were in, you would just know you were in danger. What if the next blow is that freak blow that puts you in a coma and kills you. Like that actress that barely bumped her head skiing and was ok and talking and fine and then went into a coma all of a sudden and died. There are lots of one hit kill cases. This wasn't even one hit though, this was a beating he was taking.
Also there is the possibility that the teen was trying to take Zimmerman's gun which very well may have meant the end for Zimmerman. If someone is beating you and tries to take your gun you really have no option, but to shoot them.

That actress, as you put it (Natasha Richardson, btw), is just further proof Zimmerman didn't fear for his life. If he was fearful he might die from sustain head injuries he would have gone to the ER....we are all aware of the dangers of head trauma, so why did he decide not to be taken by ambulance to the ER.......

You dont know that Trayvon was the agressor even. You are assuming. By most forms of logic the man following him after the police told him not to (And had been following him quite awhile) the agressor.
And the point about fights goes into lethal force. Zimmerman was not in a life and death situation, even from the wounds he had he was not in a life and death situation. That is the only time that lethal force should be used.edit on 29-4-2012 by Resurected because: (no reason given)
We don’t need you to do that. [2:26]

Zimmerman himself said Trayvon looked to be in his late teens on the call.
Also for the exact words.
911 dispatcher:
Are you following him? [2:24]
Zimmerman:
Yeah. [2:25]
911 dispatcher:
OK.
