Obama gets personal over killing of black Florida teenager

President Barack Obama weighed into the controversial killing of a black teenager in Florida in very personal terms on Friday, comparing the boy to a son he doesn't have and calling for American "soul searching" over how the incident occurred.

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said in his first comments about the shooting, acknowledging the racial element in the case.

What the hell is this? Obama is getting all touchy because a black teenager was shot dead. Now i agree with him, all this killing needs to stop. But just the other day, a black man shot and killed a white father while his daughter was watching. Why doesn't Obama bring that incident up?

Just some food for thought.

I don't think that happened just the other day. I think that story was from a couple months or even years ago wasn't it? The black guy shooting the white guy? I think it was an old story that got dragged up again here on ATS after this more recent incident.

This happened this week, the kid was on his phone with his girlfriend, he told her someone was following him. I live in Florida in a community that was seniors only. There is a patrol and they even have the sherriifs logo on the golf cart they ride around in. They act like their the damn police, so I could see this happenning and an innocent teen with a future dying

People wanted Obama to step in and do something about all this, and we thought he would because he's black and should stand up for other blacks, like blacks tend to do because they are much more family and race oriented than whites tend to be.

And now that he has; Its time to pull out the reverse race card?

If Obama brought up every murder that happens in the US he'd be on the news twice an hour on average.

He's bringing this up because he feels like it will be beneficial politically.

Race has nothing to do with this case UNLESS it was a hate crime, and my understanding is so far there is no evidence that it was. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Does anyone know what the teen was saying or doing that may have lead the shooter to think he was dangerous. All I've heard is things like " poor kid" " He was innocent". In my mind I don't think the shooter would have killed him for no reason. He Probably killed him as a prerequisite to being killed himself. Just a thought...IDK...media does turn things around...

Blacks are more race oriented and family oriented? What? Care to show some empirical data?

I'm Italian background and my family is the most family oriented and racist group of people I have ever met..

I wouldn't say Italians are more family and race oriented than anyone else. Why? Because it's ignorant and has no basis in fact beyond my opinion.

Well, looks like his "son" would be a very BAD boy...

The truth is coming out that his "son" wasnt the one behaving here. In fact this SON... was the aggressor who was terminated in self-defense.

NOT a son I would be proud of...

I agree...he should've stayed out of it. With the number of assault and killing occuring in the US taking a stance on this sensitive case simply makes one wonder ...why? whats the motive?

Let's see a case that has turned the eyes of the nation to Florida. A case that has brought into question just how reasonable self-defense legislation is. A case that questions whether the police department acted appropriately. And you expect the President to not have something to say about it? I find it more disturbing that none of the Republican candidates have had nothing to say about the subject. Somehow they manage to find the time to address moonbases, gay marriage, contraception, abortion, porn, war with Iran and pipelines that could poison the water supply in the middle of the food belt. At least the President is actually paying attention to the here and now. And just one question for you. How exactly was it you felt when the last President weighed in on the Schivo case?

Yeah because it makes more sense for Obama to hear about a white kid and say if I had another child it would look like him


He may see a resemblance to himself and the kid what's the big deal. He made a statement..get over it. Nothing more.

In no way did he ask for the punishment of Zimmerman because the kid was black....you are just making sh#t up to help your Obama hatred.

I am sure other presidents have made statements about tragedies that have made international headlines. Since it's Obama though...how dare he....

This kid was just walking, at first the media was told the shooter was white, if he's white than im purple. Sanford P.D. thought noone would bat an eye if a white man did it. The man is a cold blooded killer who has ties with the Sanford P.D. My my what is this world coming to???? Hate, greed,and all that goes with it. Sad very sad
