Twitter: Building Collapse in NYC (Possible Aircraft part?)

usnews.msnbc.msn.com]h ttp://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/03/18/10739125-twitter-reports-building-collapses-in-nycs-rockaway-near-jfk-airport]usnews.msnbc.msn.com

Emergency crews were on the scene of what was reported to be a building collapse in the Rockaway section of Queens, New York, late Saturday night, according to Twitter traffic from the area.

Tweets from @WilliamsburgNews and @NYCityAlerts, among others, said the address was a three-story building in the 400 block of Beach 72nd Street, near Gouverner Avenue. That address is a couple miles in nearly a direct line southwest of the end of a runway at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Just wondering if anyone has any more info. Odd situation. Some of the reports say a couple of injuries and a few escaped. Here's a twitter feed link:

Well, this could probably be the reason why everyone is packing up and leaving town in a frantic. Who knows. Hope everyone is okay. Not sure if he's near that area. He did say North East.

Upda ted info

The third floor of an apartment building in the Rockaway neighborhood of Queens, New York, collapsed during a party late Saturday night, injuring 12 people, emergency officials told NBC News.

The Fire Department / EMS press office told NBC that the third floor caved into the second floor and that all of the victims appeared to have been on the third floor. Officials said only two were taken to the hospital and the rest were being evaluated at the scene.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emergency officials told NBC that eight of the victims had to be extracted by New York firefighters.

The apartment building is in the 400 block of Beach 72nd Street.

Earlier tweets that an object appeared to have fallen from an aircraft and hit the building were untrue.

Looks like nothing more than structural failure at this point.

It's starting to sound more like a frat party now.

Do you know where your children are?

Dang kids, always bringing down the house.

I miss those parties. Those were fun.

Thanks for posting the update. Early twitter reports were stirring rumors about airplane parts falling out of the sky. Glad it wasn't more serious.

You're welcome... I am curious about the offical cause though. 8 people doesnt seem like enough to cause a structural failure. It could have been worse had the second floor also collapsed onto the first. I wonder if the building was one of those retrofits where they beef up the structural support in order to build upwards on the old structure.

Either way the mega millions lottery is up to 241 million. Sounds like the survivors might want to play some numbers.

Moral of the story.

Never live near an airport.

That picture is hinky so the "stop" is facing the lot which means traffic comes that way into the steet?

Shouldn't it be facing towards the pavement?

Buildings collapse all the time.

What!?

And there's a pic of the building with what appears to be a big 'STOP' painted on the pavement for those driving from a graveled dead end, but never fear, there is a dead end sign for those coming from the other direction so they don't drive into the...well 'dead end' and for safety's sake there's a crosswalk as well, to protect the predestrians from that heavily trafficked intersection.

Not questioning the story..maybe a little.. but the pic doesn't make sense nor does it validate anything.

If that is where I think it is, there wasn't always a dead end there.
