The right way to read it is to not read it at all.

Just kidding, but seriously you can't let people's sensationalized interpretations get to you. The bible was written thousands of years ago, and relates to life as it was thousands to hundreds of years ago, not as life is in the modern day. It's a nice work of fiction, but nothing more.
