Have no idea if this is the right forum -- couldn't really find an appropriate forum. Just curious if there is anyone here into - FACE READING (FR) and/or MICRO-EXPRESSIONS (ME)?

If you have watched and enjoy the TV series LIE to ME then you are on to ME - though not necessarily FR..
FR patterns is a result of repetitive MEs. Those muscle twitches reshape our face over time as a river can reshape a valley.

Would consider myself skilled at certain aspects of FR. And ME - improving. Just downloaded various Paul Ekman books and apps. Have seen some episodes of LIE to ME, but I've got some time so I may be able to watch many of the others over the next few weeks.

Don't have any particular questions, but just throwing out a hook per se.

Sounds interesting but some ppl who lie also can afford botox and plastic surgery to disguise these known facial giveaways.

I think that was one of the best shows that FOX had on their station. I miss it.

True...to an extent. What I am best at is reading and understanding the movement of the eyes -- and that can't be hidden. But that ability also depends on the who is looking (Which I don't believe Ekman is aware of).....for the eyes are the window to the soul...the "cleaner" one's soul is (Can vary depending on what emotions are going on in one's own mind), the more effective one can be at it.

The nose, yes that can definitely be altered - temporarily, because the underlying emotions will cause the nose to grow again. Also, unless one knows what an "optimal" nose is - a post-surgery nose can still reveal certain tendencies.

Have studied plastic surgery a little bit -- how to spot fake tits being #1 -- which I don't care for at all. Major turn off. Have read about how botox limits facial expressions.Could certainly improve that "BS" detection. Getting better at seeing behind the illusion of cosmetic makeup -- especially to eyes, cheeks, and mouth. Frankly, girls with makeup are becoming a major turn off too.

So many illusions....but a trained mind beats any plastic surgery / makeup, etc...

as a relative comparison...

And I'll hesitate to say until I know more, that our built in subconscious lie-detector will improve as well when our mind-body works more optimally. In other words just as what we eat affects our mood, energy level, etc... it also affects our BS detector. For many non alcoholic foods affect our sensory perception too.

yes, I've read a few of Ekman's books.

Lie to Me is based off of the work of Dr. Paul Ekman who theorized that there wasn't universal emotional markers and was proven completely wrong and found that there are 6 emotions that are universal that can be seen on the faces of people all over the world. They are:
surprise, happiness, sadness, fear, anger, and disgust

His work is very cool to read about, there are tests on his website that you have to pay for that cops and probably tsa use.

After reading Ekman my girlfriend told me about Daniel Goleman and "Emotional Intelligence" which is working with the emotions, and not just recognizing them. It was really revealing for me since I tend to be in my head and bad about expressing emotions. There are tons of great studies that he talks about that should make us reform education and start teaching Emotional Intelligence in schools in the first years. We would have a much better society.

An easy exercise is to look at photos of babies -- study their facial features one at a time then compare to adults.
Especially the nose.....notice what is different. Just was looking at a recent photo of Ekman. And w/o having read any of his books yet...though I am watching the Lie to Me series in sequence more/less, his knowledge of emotions only goes so far because he doesn't understand his own emotions.

I can see it on his face.

He is certainly very skilled at the EXTERNAL expression of emotions, and if the Lie to Me series is indicative -- what triggers emotional expressions. But not too skilled at the - origin - of those emotions and how to prevent them from occurring in the 1st place. The INTERNAL workings of emotions is different than the external.

For reading his face he doesn't appear to know how to release his own emotions, and prevent them (the unpleasant ones -- Anger, contempt, etc...) from occurring / being created.

Well..I'll keep watching..and maybe provide some kind of summary if I get around to it...at the end of it all. Then maybe I will tackle his books...but certainly I will go through some of the software - FACS - Facial Action Coding System.

Can provide insights on preventing unpleasant emotions from being created in the 1st place right now if anyone wants to know...

CBC - The Truth About Liars

www.cbc.ca...

The truth is ... we are all liars. Scientists say that by the age of four we have all learned to lie. We lie to protect ourselves and others. We lie to protect others' feelings, and to get what we want and need. Most of us fib in one of every four conversations that last more than ten minutes. One study showed that university students lie to their mothers fifty percent of the time. We lie in one-third of our conversations with our romantic partners, and we tell the most serious lies to the people we care about the most. (read more 'truth' about lies) The Truth About Liars reveals the only certain thing we know about lying: everyone does it, and we can't easily detect it.

In this entertaining documentary, world class specialists share their findings and theories about the art of the untruth including: Paul Ekman, developer of the Micro Expression Training Tool and author of Telling Lies, and Why Kids Lie; Jeff Hancock, a Cornell University professor who explores the role deception plays within the internet; Stephen Porter, a specialist in crime and deception as the director of the forensic certificate program at Dalhousie University; and David Livingstone Smith, a philosopher dedicated to analyzing the link between nature and deception and co-founder of the New England Institute for Cognitive Science and Evolutionary Psychology.

This also has Ekman, but also another author - David Livingstone Smith - whose book I read called WHY WE LIE some years ago..2005...which goes deeper than Ekman and delves into our subconscious (Again, not having read any of Ekman's books, but just basing off the video series) . Have since gone even further over here and found the precise reasons why we lie to others AND ourselves -- and how to prevent it. 1 part CONscious, 1 part SUBCONscious.

Why We Lie book image

One of the statements from this book which is explained ---

The more we lie to others - the more we lie to ourselves....

#1 reason we lie...we lie to protect an idea...in this case... an idea / image / facade - we maintain about ourSELVES. Our standing in society - externalized (position of power) or internalized (perceived). Our capabilities - real or imagined (intelligence, power, strength for example). Our status in relationships with others (Strength of love/bond for example with whomever, parent, bf/gf, boss, etc...) -- also popularity. Also we lie when under duress/fear (of unknown) - quite often because we are afraid to admit we are scared. Image...a.k.a. as pride.

It depends on the cultures we have lived under and the media (TV, movies, music) we are exposed to & past lives which determines which components of pride are stronger than others. Many media that we expose ourselves to right now that we think of as enjoyable, in a bigger picture, is harmful. But this requires a very deep understanding and comfort with our own emotions and that of others - maybe Emotional IQ as previous poster noted.

A recurring theme in the first few episodes of Lie to Me (About to watch S01E05) is Lightman's partner (Foster) inability to see her husband lying to her, for she is blinded by LOVE. (Been there before more than a few times)
Love is an idea - as above. That's why LOVE is EVOL - it blinds us. (Just saw S01E04 - about the lies behind a marriage/wedding)

This documentary gives a informing introduction to it...but by no means an end within itself.
Pride is the "deadliest" for all the other "sins" derive from it...

HC: 7 Deadly Sins - Pride - Part 1 of 3

Part 2 of 3

Part 3 of 3

Knocking out pride, in all of its forms, for it has many components -- in its entirety is another matter altogether...possible...for those who are determined. There's a "big pot of gold" per se waiting at the end of the effort...but this prize is not a monetary / material possession reward. Something altogether different.

But, best to see that in person....for words on a website...are just that, words......

What do you think?

One of the meanings (Hindu) of the word MAYA = Illusion of the SELF. That veil is about to be lifted in short order.
