Transformer explosion sparks blaze, blackout

news.bostonherald.com

Much of the Back Bay went pitch dark around 7:30, about an hour into the fire, with no streetlights and no traffic lights. In the Prudential Center, people screamed when the power went out, plunging the mall into darkness for several seconds before emergency lighting came up. The only lights to be seen in Copley Square were from cell phones that people used to light their way. Some people settled into candlelit restaurants to wait it out.

“Check your Twitterfeed!” one young woman said into her phone. “You haven’t heard? A transformer blew. All the lights are out.”

Not the first time something like this has happened. Recently it happened in San Francisco During a playoff game. What is alarming however is that account of toxic gas wether true or not.

When transformers blow most infrastructure fails. For instance you might still be able to start up a lap top, but chances are you won't be able to connect to the internet.

Is this a sign of things to come?

It seems unlikely in the San Francisco case, but I would imagine that strong solar storms would increase the chance of a transformer explosion, especially in places that are further north.
