Bug Out Car/Daily Driver

I have not really given much thought to diesel, but diesel is a great fuel choice for a bug out vehicle. mainly due to the fact that there are multiple ways to produce diesel from common oils found at stores and restaurants, most of these types of cooling oil especially when "used" will be over looked by looters as "unusable trash" therefore leaving them for you to refine into fuel for your vehicle.

Get a clutch because if your battery dies, you can pop the clutch to get the car started.

More then four wheel drive, the tires you buy make the car.

I come from the north where we rely on snow tires, not four wheel drive. A great set of snow tires has me passing the spun out trucks in a snowstorm.
And that was in a mustang.

I would say get a hatchback for room.

You bring up a good point. My stbxh is a volvo tech. He doesn't rebuild anything anymore, they upload and download programs. lol

You can actually ruin a car permenantly by downloading the wrong program into the motherboard. The guys that failed school were the ones who didn't know computers.

New cars need to many computer diagnostic tools.

I dated this guy 20 years ago whose father was a mechanic, and he predicted that in a few years, they won't be mechanics but just be IT car specialists. He hit the nail on the head.

Well, if gas mileage didn't matter, a chevy c-10 from the 70s or 80s will still be running when hell is frozen, so that's a great option for a bug out vehicle.

Since gas mileage is a consideration you might try to find one of the solid axle toyota SR5s from the early 80s. They're about as tough as a c-10 but seriously lack power. Gas mileage is managable for most people though. They last forever and if you can find one in good condition it will serve you for a very long time if you maintain it. You could also buy a clunker and fix it up the way you want it if you have mechanical knowledge. The 90 hp 4 cylinder doesn't burn much gas.

Stay away from s-10s with lift kits. The axles in those trucks are weak as water with anything larger than 31s, and if you have a 4.3 v-6 it drinks gas. The 2.6 isn't bad but it has less power than an SR5. S-10s are tough as nails barring big tires, but the SR5 is a bit better, and way better on gas.
