Well, if gas mileage didn't matter, a chevy c-10 from the 70s or 80s will still be running when hell is frozen, so that's a great option for a bug out
vehicle.
Since gas mileage is a consideration you might try to find one of the solid axle toyota SR5s from the early 80s. They're about as tough as a c-10 but
seriously lack power. Gas mileage is managable for most people though. They last forever and if you can find one in good condition it will serve you
for a very long time if you maintain it. You could also buy a clunker and fix it up the way you want it if you have mechanical knowledge. The 90 hp
4 cylinder doesn't burn much gas.
Stay away from s-10s with lift kits. The axles in those trucks are weak as water with anything larger than 31s, and if you have a 4.3 v-6 it drinks
gas. The 2.6 isn't bad but it has less power than an SR5. S-10s are tough as nails barring big tires, but the SR5 is a bit better, and way better on
gas.
