110 on the freeway in the early AM, it was the last time I sped too. A hotshot comes from behind doing at least 150 perhaps more as he passed me like I was standing still and nearly collided with me in the process. 30 seconds later I saw this same car doing a 360 over 2 lanes after colliding against the left median and being shot over to the right median.

I will never forget seeing what my brain registered as the occupant being thrown from the vehicle as it spun. Given my speed I narrowly averted debris from the wreck by a matter of a foot or two. Have never seen a need to go more than 5 mph over on the freeway since.

I went to pick up a friend in Spokane, WA it was 8-9 hours round trip. Top speed I reached in the plains was 135 right to the pin in a 1.8l kia 5-speed. I don't think I dropped below 100 for a few hours on the way back. I thought I was going fast until a mini van shot past me going what looked like 140 at 3am. I had a close call with the police when me and another person were speeding through traffic going back down the mountains on those multi-lane wide-switchbacks. We got to a wide opening in traffic and began using the full birth of the road. The cop passed me and went straight for him. I guess it's because he had the lead? Nicer car? Great times though, I learned how well my "p.o.s." can handle.

How about an INDICATED (very important word when talking about top speed lol) 140mph+ (speedo only went to 140) in a 1998 Ford Escort 1.8 16v (British, not American version) on a road that wasn't the M69, between Leicester and Birmingham. The only modification was a cone filter, which added nothing to the power, but made a nice sound.

I managed to take this picture because I didn't believe it would go so fast
edit on 11-3-2012 by puggtiracer because: Picture added for those who'll shout 'pics or STFU' lol

I would love to play with the Autobahn before I die. I would especially love to run the Hennessey Venom I drove against a Veyron. Or maybe the new Venom GT.... It's output is adjustable between something like 850-1200BHP and is built on an Exige.

They claim a top speed of 275 MPH. I'd most likely die. With a smile on my face, of course.

Totally untrue, sir. A properly added cone can add upwards of 3HP. Idiotic warm air intakes can actually cause the car to lose power (I'm talking to you, ricers hanging out in big box store parking lots the world over).

Now, you say you had a cone on an Escort. I've driven many Escorts, many of which were for Rallying and thus modified. Did you have any stickers/wings stolen from an airport strapped to your Escort? That would make it fast as hell, thereby proving that you had WAY more power but were too scared to use it.

The power's in the extra weight added by stupid body mods and stickers. You old guys will never get that.

Maxed out late at night, down hill, wind blowin behind me!!

But I did maintain an average of 130 mph from st. louis to kansas city. In a 4 car train down I-70.

I didn't think to mention this in my earlier post, but in Missouri, going above a certain speed (unsure of the number) is a FELONY! Be aware!!

BTW, a crazy chick I worked with in West Plains, Missouri, drove some ricer on a very hilly two-lane blacktop between West Plains and Alton, so fast that the car was getting airborne on the hilltops. Insane.

I think that's the same everywhere. In NY double the posted speed limit is an insta-felony. That's why I do most racing/speed runs on private roads or the track.

Same thing with my 71. That's why it's the only car I've ever owned with aftermarket body parts.

Very nice! I have a 32k SC 3800 Series 2 that would love to find a home in one of those. I just can't find one that doesn't need a full half of the body replaced, and I refuse to make one into a kit car. I've seen them as Opals, Lambos, Ferraris... I even saw a conversion to a scale model Russian T-52. No. No, no, no, no.

Truth is .. there are speed limits on most parts of the Autobahn nowadays, and even when there is not I have some moron infront of me who is overtaking with +1 km/h and who won't go to the right unless you almost drive into his trunk.

Yeah, I heard about the limits but that's my only shot. The salt flats are the only other limitless area I know of, but good luck getting any further than 2/3 of the vehicle's capable top end on that surface.

130 MPH in this....

Had plenty to go, the car felt solid at the speed.
I decided to let off though (I really wanted to push it more but decided against it).

I drove the Autobahn a couple of years ago. I could not believe the number of trucks on the road. There was so much construction that moving at speed was almost impossible. There was a lot of congestion. In one area there was a two mile backup because lookee-loos were watching white asparagus being harvested. A lot of the autobahn roads are pretty old and showing their wear and a bit narrow compared to something like I-5 or I-90. Also tends to be tunnel-like because trees have grown up so tall close to the shoulder. The freeway through Frankfurt was very nice and modern, a pleasure to drive.

I actually screwed up royally one day. I had a GPS and had used it to walk around a town. I left it on "walk" when I got back in the car and had an intersting back-country drive avoiding allautobahns until I realized what I'd done.

160 is the fastest I did on a regular basis with my chip-tuned VW Passat VR6.
I live in Germany, 3 minutes away from the Autobahn.

Better than 140mph...a couple of times. This was in a 1969 Dodge Dart Swinger 340cid (punched out to 360) with a 4 speed that had a narrow gate Hurst shifter. The speedo only went to 140. Both times the car was still accelerating, but I had to back out of it as I was running out of road. All I can say is it felt good...

Ahh the Dart Swinger 340. That was the first car I built with my father at age 9. Wheelies galore.

OK, first a small disclaimer that this was back in my young and stupid days......

297kph in my Gen1 Rx7. Hume Hwy, Vic, Australia. So close to the magic 300....

173mph in a friends 2001 Dodge Viper RT, unknown location, New Hampshire, US.

Both GPS verified....

In the last 10 years my fastest has been 118kph on Princes Hwy, Vic, Australia. In a 110 zone...

Yeah, some parts of the Autobahn are very busy. I live near the A40, it's very, very busy because it's a important connection between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and the Ruhrgebiet, Germany's largest industrial area. A bit further north lies the A57, it's very quiet in comparison to the A40 and you can maintain top speed even during the daytime.

The best German Autobahn I know is the A31, especially at night it's almost completely empty.
