there are a number of deeper aspects in knowing who the biological father is

with the new 'digital' heath records soon to be going online, a health history can be projected for the child.
Presently there is only the Mothers side of a family health history which makes preventive health services unreliable, even debilitating things like alzheimers will soon be lessened if treated before it's onset

and the only way to know if the child will be susceptible to Alzheimers is to know the medical histories of both biological parents.

Another Factor, one example is that the biological father dies before the child is born, (out of wedlock)
then the parent of the deceased man that fathered the baby refuses to release health records, refuses to accept the child as belonging to that family.
what if that child has complications like Asthma, is qualified to be on Medicare....but has no 'father' & State & Federal agencies cannot force a DNA comparison?
that child cannot collect 'Social Security Survivor/Dependent benefits because of the deceased father's Mother refuses to face reality

the long ago Santorum statement (1994) goes deeper than just the 'gut reaction aspect' of the proposed change in welfare privacy standards... the proposal should be looked into further

~but i am no fan of his, nor romney either~

RE: i myself have no health records of my biological parents

I'm not saying it's 'okay' or it isn't. It's not my call and none of my business. It's even less the business of the goverment's (who sleeps with who).

About single fathers? Let's put it this way. I bred horses for many a years. A favorite phrase of mine comes to mind. 'You always know who the mare is.'. By no means is this an insult to women but it fits. It's tough to mistake the mother. The father is another story.

Not to sound like a total jerk, but why would you have kids if you couldn't support them on your own?

i stick with what i said

What is your fixation with this personally related experience?

Have you ever been in a controlling relationship? It doesn't happen overnight. It is a slow process you accept and adjust to - - trying to make your marriage work.

Especially with someone so young - - who is mistaking control for caring. Chances are her father/brother (or other male figure in her childhood) was a controlling person - - and that's her only real experience of how a man should be and show love.

NO - - she did not know what she was getting into.

Let's hear your personal story of why you put yourself in the position of being an "expert" on women in a controlled abusive marriage.

Well in my case, I not only pay child support, I get to pay child support for the same child to two different states. In addition to that, I get to pay out for every bit of aid she has ever received, and I get to pay it to a women who has purposely kept my child from me and refused to allow me to get a paternity test, and refuses to let me see my child. I don't mind paying child support, but I do have a problem with paying back every bit of aid she receives and I mind for two reasons.

I don't think the courts are fair in all cases. I do think there is effort to make them more fair.

My dad walked out on us because my mom contracted polio and he couldn't deal with it. He found a comforting shoulder to cry on and left. We were 7 - 6 and 1 year. He sent his check. That's all he did.

I had to divorce my kids father because he was jealous of his own children and it was beginning to affect them. They were 7 and 4. He sent his check. That is all he did.

I was abandoned by my father - except for a check each month. My kids were abandoned by their father - except for a check each month.

My grandson's father died of Cancer before he was a month old. They were not married. Now the burden is on the mother to prove paternity through the courts and DNA to get Social Security support. She has to pay for it.

I would have welcomed a man that wanted to be a father to his kids. Life is not fair.

However - - - the majority problem is men abandoning children completely - - - without any support.

I'm actually thinking this is a good idea. I have no idea how he'd implement it.
But getting dead beat dads to pay for kids may stop them from mass procreating
tons of kids who will just end up on welfare, foodstamps and getting free lunches
at school ... all paid for by the tax payer.

I agree. I'm not a Santorum supporter (he cannot carry the nation), but this doesn't sound like a bad idea.
There are too many women and men who are irresponsible in creating children that they cannot provide for.

I really do not like the socialist mindset of these "Liberal Progressives."

I think a paternity test should be mandatory in all cases.

The samples should be destroyed after, but i see no reason why mothers should be allowed to lie about who is the father, now that we can easily determine the truth.

I see mostly good things coming out of this :

It will prevent young people from experiencing the trauma of discovering that their father is not really their father and their mother is a liar.

It will avoid situations where innocent men end up paying 18 years of support for child that is not theirs, and maybe discovering that the child they supported is not theirs.

It will also stop some men who father a child and then runs away from their responsibility. - and save the taxpayers some money.

It might even save some lying woman from being killed or beaten by an enraged man, who just discovered after many years.

The only loss - is the woman's option of lying.

It is better to know the truth from the beginning.

so you are advocating that all women have to work instead of staying home with the children. So your ok with institutions raising all the children?

So instead of taking this story at face value, you demean the sister by saying she is a gold digger, she didn't provide for herself, and its all her fault.

you are not any better then Santorum.

The success of America IS BECAUSE we take care of our own.

Not by rejecting the less fortunate and making the poorer, poorer.

If everyone acted perfectly, there would be no need for any system. But no one acts personally, people get others fired, boyfriends and husbands rape their women, people don't get jobs because of gender or race.

Until there is perfect morality, there will be the less fortunate.

Ok, so we will take all these same reasons and apply them to the public.

Since it is SO important to know who the father is,then every male in the US should have their dna tested for paternity, just in case.

As you say, it is so important.
Then we need to do it just in case the father dies, takes off, or goes and starts a new family altogether and won't pay child support.

I love how so many conspiracy theorists are so bigoted against poor single mothers that they are actually supporting the government collection of dna for all parties involved.

You are loony.

Santorum is retarded.
This is illegal, a waste of money.
IF this was the only bad thing he ever did, this alone would be enough for me not to vote for him and to campaign against him. It's just to absurd and it shows he will NEVER get it.

There is no provision in our Constitution that give folks welfare. Welfare is an Un-constitutional Government program. Irregardless if Rick Santorum is a moron or not. America home of the hand out... No freaking wonder their 25 million illegals walking into our country... We give it away for free, so they come and take it.

There should be no welfare system what so ever. We created this mess, by letting the gov do as they damn well please. Until we take the stand to stop it or eradicate the reasons we have it. It aint going anywhere, it'll just get bigger. And so you know, I was a single father for 17 years. I never once took $$$ from the Government. I worked hard did with out and lived within my means. I now am a much better man for doing it the right/hard way.

My kids got more out of that than I did. They learned there's a right way & a wrong way. They allso learned how to be self sufficent and live within their means. Life's hard, get a helmet.

I have mixed emotions and thoughts about this line of thinking.

I do agree that if you father a child, you should "man up" and help to support the child. Making babies and running away is the path of a spoiled brat little boy and a coward.

On the other hand...making the mother and the child suffer is completely wrong. We are supposed to be an evolved, civilized society...we are not supposed to inflict hardship on someone because we disagree with their values nor should we expect a child to suffer because perhaps his parents made mistakes or bad decisions...it is not the child's fault.

I have looked at the GOP's war on women and birth control and pro-choice issues and am completely puzzled by a party that says they want small government and gov out of your life. There is something hidden beneath the surface here...I'm almost certain of it.

Sometimes I think they are worried because statistics say that Caucasian Americans are having less children and I think they are afraid of becoming a minority...so they want to secretly force people to make more babies...well...the babies they want (White anglo saxon christian)

At other times, I wonder why they want to bring babies into this world who will suffer from poverty...and then I consider they (TPTB) need to maintain the sheer numbers of uneducated slave class, poverty level workers.

Or it could be something else or a insane combination of things...either way...their "pro-life" position and the fact that they would let someone die of starvation or of exposure due to homelessness...is hypocrisy...they are not pro-life after birth....they are pro-control...and that's that.

But this is just my opinion of the GOP...basically i think all parties suck...

Nix,

please explain the above comment.

I am not necessarily against this whole topic, but do not like being put into the 'bigoted conspiracy theorist' boat.

I know many single mothers, some on welfare, some not.
Some receiving child support, some not.

I dont think its very fair to start throwing the 'bigot' name around here because someone has a different opinion than you. I have stated in the very beginning of this thread that supplying a name for the father on the welfare application is not really a bad idea, others have pointed out how this is already policy in many places . Does that make me a bigot?

I also stated earlier in this thread that I was proud of ATS by being able to have this conversation in an educated and civil matter...my how this thread has devolved.
