One third of UK whites claim they are victims of racism

A growing number of white people believe they are the victims of racial prejudice in Britain, official research has found.

Almost one in three - 29 per cent - said they now expected to be treated worse than other races by key public services.

And the number of whites claiming to have been refused a job or discriminated against at work for reasons of race has doubled in the last five years, according to the Government study.

That's not fact, either you are stating a situation that happened to you - which, as an anecdote might be valid, but is hardly an across-the-board verification of occurrence - or you are repeating hearsay from someone else (which is also not a total verification).

Everyone here has this mental image that is built up by stories told by everyone from that guy you talked to in gym class that one time all the way up to Rush Limbaugh, but I'm sorry, I'm just not seeing numbers here. I'm not seeing the facts.

29% expect to be treated a certain way...again, it's the story told over and over again, so you take it as your own...but are 29% actually being discriminated again by public services?

Also, for the second statistic..."doubled"...doubled from what? And, that's a perception. It works both ways.

The only legitimate way to avoid this all together: individualized focus, equalization of education, total removal of so-called "Race" statistics for HR or other purposes. Since they tell me I don't have to, I never check the box.

EDIT: Also, what a deceptive title the Daily Mail has used: "One Third of Whites now claim they ARE victims of racism"

Read further down:

Almost one in three - 29 per cent - said they now EXPECTED TO BE treated worse than other races by key public services.

Expecting to be and being are not the same thing.

Discrimination means to seperate someone for something they do as opposed to leaving everyone else alone for doing the same thing.

I don't think discrimination applies to racism, because whoever posted this thread is outwardly racist to ask this question and pit two groups against one another...

You are discriminating the human race by asking questions like this...just get along with other peaceful persons.

I see your point, but I don't post on this site because I expect to change the mind of the OPs and trollers. I post because I feel that when the argument becomes one sided, the sheepish-like, wishy-washy, middle-of-the-road folks (the ones who just are hear reading these posts and not taking an active role) get the other side of the argument. I want those who are reading this to think and not just take every single thing that is spewed here at face value. They need to understand that it's not all so cut and dry.

I take it back, I don't see your point...I'm discriminating against people by scrutinizing a story in a newspaper? I guess I thought I followed you, but now I'm a bit lost...??

It could be objectively observed that you are outwardly racist against white people by attempting to deny them the right to ask the question, "Are whites more discriminated against than black people?".

By the way, the original study was conducted by Sociologists from Harvard and Tufts universities.

Perhaps you should send them a strongly worded E-mail telling them, that in your considered opinion, they are outwardly racist. That should give them a laugh.

The article states

And the number of whites claiming to have been refused a job or discriminated against at work for reasons of race has doubled in the last five years, according to the Government study.

Seven per cent believed they had failed to win a promotion because of their race, up from three per cent in 2003.

Three per cent alleged they had been turned down for a job for the same reason, up from one per cent.

www.dailymail.co.uk...

The information you sought was in the article.

The UK governmental study largely deals with the perception of racism by people. The article makes that point clearly.

Sorry, I would have spent more time on the article if my computer hadn't started acting erratically. My computer doesn't act well with ads for some reason. At any rate, it was the title I was put off by.

Let's say what I did casually, because I'm working, is what many people do when they come across an article: read the title and move on. Hell, it's what Fox nation thrives on if you've ever read their site. The title said "are" as in they are being discriminated, whereas the article itself says "expected to be". These do not mean the same thing.

I mean, maybe I'm derailing the thread, but it's sensationalizing for the paper to use these terms when they distort the truth. What people hold in their mind to be true is not reality. Just because people "feel" like they're being discriminated against, doesn't mean they actually are. I imagine that a true survey of such an action would be difficult and what I would be more interested in reading would be a case by case analysis of people who were actually discriminated against.

Regarding the "doubling", I still take issue. Double sounds horrible...it sounds like a lot. Examples:

"The population of China doubled"

"The price of oil doubled"

Etc.

Going from three-point-whatever percent to 7% of people who "feel" discriminated is less shocking.

Again, I'm sorry if this is derailing, but I feel like articles that use this sort of sensational framing, both by how they title the article versus the actual content and how they use statistics in the most shocking way possible (such as showing a graph that leaves out months prior or condenses X or the Y axis to get the necessary steep climb or drastic drop). This same sort of action is why people ASSUME things without having actual truth to back it up.

I will maintain that "feeling" or "expecting to be" are not valid replacements for "actually being".

Well, outward racism means to bring up the topic of race into the public realm, you have done this.

Hope that helps,

You clearly have not read any of my countless posts on the mythology of race, that race doesn't exist; that "White" is a made-up category; Black is only valid insofar as it relates to the ethnocultural continuum of the descendants of West African slaves in the US; Hispanic is only valid as a cultural term and even then it's tenuous; Asian is purely geographical, at best...etc.

I really don't get what you are implying, perhaps more explanation?

lol Every race has been sold into slavery at some point.

Live in the south. Im sure you'll get a diffrent opinion. It's not all shiney and clean as you think.

Minorities get free tuition. Whites do not unless they meet other standards. Dont even get me started on just the college aspect of it. I saw it. I was there.

Minorities get free tuition?? That's clearly coming from someone who wouldn't be classified as a "minority"....Me NOR my wife received tuition during our time in post secondary.
I ended up paying for my own education OUT OF POCKET, and she has loans totaling 70k. stop the silliness!

Those standards you talk about, were equal across the board. Her family made too much money(though they were a blue collar, 1 income home) for her to be applicable for any "minority" grants and some of those same grants only applied if she went to a historically black college, where her expertise wasn't even offered.

I lived it. I AM HERE.

once again.. Guess you have to live in the south to see it. I watched it every day and I'm not even racist. But it was one hell of a common conversation piece in Louisiana and still is. maybe you guys were not looking in the right place.

Karma is indeed beautiful is it not? People that are blind to every injustice save for those being committed onto them are not very aware or intelligent people. If you thought it's bad, it can only get worse. That's what you get for spending more money on war than on education but hey, who am I to say that right?

I believe at the moment there is much racial tension. I do feel that Blacks call racism much more than whites do and that some throw it around carelessly not thinking of the consistence.

I think that whites feel they are losing equality do to the lack of ability to speak up for them selves without being called racist. We are not aloud to be proud. We are told we must have had struggle to be proud. I find this to be silly. We all have the right to be proud of who we are.

Minorities are almost allowed to talk bad about whites and we are basically banned from sticking up for our selves. I want my tri-racial children to grow up in a world were every one has the right to stand up for them selves and I don't want them thinking that only they have the right to pride since its hard for them to find their place in a group.

Being in an interracial couple opens the minds of both involved. I understand more about her situation of being looked down upon because of her skin color. She also understands more about how white people are looked down upon because of our skin color as well. Not because I have brain washed her to do so but because she has seen first hand.

We walk a fine line on acceptance and intolerance. She has spoken with blacks that have accepted her until they found out who I was. The same thing in reverse.

~ funny story. When I was locked up for a pot charge, I was a cell mate with a kkk member. Not knowing who my wife was, treated me with respect. I one day got a picture of her in the mail all sexed up. He asked to see her so I said sure and handed him the picture. He looked at it and looked at me like I was crazy. He then took a double take of her with confusion and said " WTF is she doing with the likes of you? She could have done better"~

I guess even the most racist of white men can't help but like a beautiful brown girl lol

All joking aside. I was also treated badly from both the black and white cell mates (Nothing serious just talked to me less) after I had came out about my love.

The blacks were mad that a white man has stolen an other one of their woman and the whites were mad that I was interbreeding. I was pretty well cautious when walking past the all black cell block accross from mine because every time I did I was heckled about being a little white boy, called names and offered black %^&* in my @$$ many times. I was also threatened to be stabbed many times by them.

The thing is, any black men walking by the all white blocks would get heckled all the same. After being in there I really saw that BOTH whites and blacks are EQUALLY as racist as each other.

There is no difference besides that whites feel afraid to stand up for them selves about it. I definitely see that changing since the Martin Zimmerman case. Zimmerman isn't even a white man. Be we got the grief for it. We were blamed.

There is racial tension right now....... And lots of it.

"The Nature of the Threat" is a great song. Yet, you haven't provided anything to show and prove him wrong other than your emotions as well.

Uhm, Baghdad isn't in Turkey?

I'm pretty sure I proved him wrong since Baghdad isn't in Turkey.

I think this is an insult. 'White's' on a whole weren't subjected to centuries of slavery and oppression and are not still treated like third class citizens in western countries. The slave trade, South African Apartheid, the KKK, Nazism, BNP.. to name but a few of the more well known racist organisations, events and regimes. White people have never had to suffer to this extent.

It is unfortunate that people see equilibrium as a shift in discrimination. Black people and other minority groups in predominantly white countries are becoming more equal and many old fashioned white people see it as a loss of freedom or heritage. Unfortunately, it was the white man who created this situation by downgrading the value of black lives in order to satisfy his own greed and abhorrently raising the value of the white life as a superior race. These are now coming closer to a balance and unfortunately, the white man will have to accept that he is no more important than the black man. The black man should be extremely proud that his ancestors lived through some of the most disgusting abuse of power and fought to make themselves equals (although there is clearly still some way to go) in the modern world. Any White man that can't respect this doesn't deserve to be heard.

The Scorpion and the Frog is a fable about a scorpion asking a frog to carry him across a river. The frog is afraid of being stung during the trip, but the scorpion argues that if it stung the frog, the frog would sink and the scorpion would drown. The frog agrees and begins carrying the scorpion, but midway across the river the scorpion does indeed sting the frog, dooming them both. When asked why, the scorpion points out that this is its nature. The fable is used to illustrate the position that the behaviour of some creatures is irrepressible, no matter how they are treated and no matter what the consequences

I may have not been oppressed for centuries but I have been most of my life. Picked on for being small and for being white in an all black neighborhood, for dressing like a freak when I was younger, Picked on for my sexual preference and my interracial breeding. I have been oppressed by those stronger than me and smarter than me. I have seen hard ships and gone thru hell.

I think I have the right to be proud of who I am simply from my personal life. I don't have to prove to you that I struggled harder than you to be proud or feel discriminated.

And a lot of Caucasian cultures went thru slavery. The Jews were enslaved by the Egyptians, the Scotts by the Britts. Not to mention all the oppression our kings did to us. Granted it wasn't from a race but whites had to work hard to get to were they were ( Don't worry about the slavery days because there was time before that. Whites didn't always own black slaves)

This "I get to be proud and you don't" BS is just that BS. I've been homeless and had to eat from a Panera bread dumpster, because at the age of 18 after being kicked out of my house, no one would help me with food because I was just a dirty, homeless, hippy (I'm not a hippy just looked like one lol)

Its not only blacks that have had to struggle. Its all of us. In one way or an other.
