I wouldn't call any of those discrimination. The person in all of your examples just assumed that to be the case.

Racism is the belief of superioty of one race over another.

Actually, you are wrong and andersensrm is right. Racism is defined as a support for discrimination. Belief in genetic superiority of certain race is not enough to be called a racist.

Racism is the belief that inherent different traits in human racial groups justify discrimination.

Racism

Yes but you are only linking one part of the definition. And it sure is tied to belief in superiority of one race over others:

racism[rey-siz-uhm]   Origin rac·ism   /ˈreɪsɪzəm/ Show Spelled[rey-siz-uhm] Show IPA
noun
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races

dictionary.reference.com...

Definition 2. helps support the link between discrimination and racism. But racism is the belief/idea, discrimination is the action of it (or can be the action of other things not related to racism).

Actually the word "Cracker" has nothing to do with the white salty goodness of saltines. It means whip cracker and was originally a term used by black slaves as a derogatory term for members of their own kind who through obedience to their slave masters acquired the privileged possition of being the one who punished their fellow slaves in exchange for better living quarters and food. Most most blacks and whites are to ignorant to look into the history of this racial slur.

Yeah but if that's the case then wouldnt that mean that all the cases/stories listed in this thread are assumed unless the person/instigator actually said a racist comment or admitted to being racist? Discrimination is usually done covertly because of laws preventing open discrimination (jobs, housing, clubs etc..).

And yes most of the examples were cases of covert racism or assumption of it (to be fair). But I am sure the example of being called a cracker was obviously racist. Nevermind though, the point I was trying make got lost in my word salad.

They expect to be able to say racial slurs and not have someone say one back to them. I just have seen that from my own personal experience. Not everyone is like that but I have seen that lots of times.

Yeah I agree, that's a good example of a double standard. That I have witnessed first hand and usually just shake my head. It's the cycle of abuse.

i really wish they would stop bringing up racism and pointing out the fact that we are different colors. I didnt even realize there were different races until a teacher in 1st grade asked us all what race we are. I mean i realized people were different colored, but thats it. All just people. Never thought anymore to it.

Exactly, but when we stop doing that, then we all become equal. Who wants that? Especially if your enjoying the benefits of being "more" equal.

Perhaps if the world stopped discriminating against women (51% of the worlds population) the lesser biases in the world would be mote.

Have to disagree here. When women stop playing into all the perks of the "discrimination" then it will stop.

Pay for my meals when we go out, drive everywhere we go,open my doors for me, work to bring home money for me to spend, cant yell at a girl thats not acceptable cant _______ to a girl nope never.

Then mistreat a woman or suggest they should get less money in certain situations because they are physically incapable of working as hard and your discriminating

Just take the blatant racism towards native americans. The Braves, have the Indian mascot, who is red skinned, big headed, and acts like an idiot, all feeding into the stereotype that native americans are red skinned, and stupid. You don't hear about it, because we basically wiped out their people and culture, and any left have been assimilated into being an American, whatever that means.

While you may not have been discriminated as a white male, many others have, including myself.

I'm 33yrs old and grew up in Baltimore in a town right outside the city. Ever since I was in Elementry School, we were taught how bad blacks were treated and how ashamed we should be for what they had suffered in the past by people of our own skin color (white). I felt horrible and told myself that I would never treat others wrongly no matter their differences. This is how most of us were raised to think, to stop racism! However, I soon realized that what they really meant was to stop racism towards black people, because whites are the majority and racism doesn't work in reverse.

When I was in the 5th grade, I was friends with a black kid named Donta (we all thought he was so cool). One day when my teacher acknowledge my last name as being Polish, my "friend" Donta, who has never been picked on by others students for his race, started to tease me and call me a "Stupid Polock" over and over. Finally, I told him that it wasn't nice to say that and that it was on the same lines if I were to call him the "N" word. At that moment my teacher (who ignored the slurs against my heritage) sent me to the principal and said she was ashamed that I said the word. I didn't call him the "N" word; I was only telling him how it was similar to what he was calling me. I was punished and had to apologize to him.

As I became a teenager, I saw more and more that the blacks in our community were actually the ones who are racist to us. If I rode my bike through a neighborhood that was predominately black (Turners Station) just to get to my friends house on the other side, I would be chased by the black kids and have my bike stolen and beaten if they caught me, so we always had to take the long way around.

When I was in high school, our cafeteria had 3 lunch lines (A, B & C line as it was called). It was a known fact that, while anyone could get in lines A or B, many of the blacks kids took over the C line. If you were not black and got in the C line, they would cut and push you to the back of the line, so most white kids stayed out of it even though it was a much shorter line. There was also a small area of tables they called "little Africa" and if you walked too close you were likely to be harassed by them. Many of them would sit with us and were our friends, but I could never sit at their table.

When I got my first job working at a buffet at the age of 16, I witnessed a horrible scene. I saw a white man beaten to death in front of his family, just because he asked a table of black teenagers next to them to watch their language around his kids.

One time I my father took me to see the movie "A Vampire in Brooklyn" starring Eddie Murphy, which turned out to be a big mistake. The theatre was 90% black and they would yell racial slurs every time a white person died like, "Bite that Cracker, fool". No one said a word about it, we knew to just take it or leave.

Recently I was at a mall with my family and a black woman came into the store we were in and was trying to return an item she said she purchased. When the lady at the register (Who was also black) started looking carefully at her receipt, she started getting irate and saying, "Why you have to look at my receipt? I'm black, you black, what's up?". She then started calling the women the "N" word and was being very rude and cussing. My wife couldn't take it anymore and said, "come on kids lets leave, you shouldn't being hear these words". That's when the black women turned to my wife and said, "F-U "B" word, if you don't like the way I talk then don't come to a black mall". As if she thought that the mall was for her people and we shouldn't be there.

My point is this: I'm not a racist! I was brought up to respect everyone! However, there are groups of blacks that are still brought up to be racist against whites and believe they deserve special treatment because of what happened to some of their people in the past. None of these kids have ever been enslaved, or mistreated in their life, but they hate us because their parents teach them to hate us. Now I'm not saying that blacks are not mistreated at all these days, but it's not like the past, if not reversed.

So yes I agree with this study that many whites do believe that we are the ones that feel oppressed, but there are no bleeding hearts for us!

By the way, my Polish ancestry came to the USA after WWII and never owned slaves so don't judge me by the color of my skin and "say well in the past whites...", we had no part in it. I don't get mad at every German for the holocaust of my people, in fact I married one.

the Atlanta Braves mascot has nothing to do with racism nor does it protray native americans in a bad light.

1. he is paid to act like a bumbling idiot because that is something that kids will like to see while there at a baseball game
2. hes wearing a mask, every mascot mask there is is oversized and protrays the mascot as having an oversized head.

Homer is the mascot of the Atlanta Braves. He has a baseball shaped head, and looks a little like Mr. Met. Before having the baseball head however, Homer was the personification of the old "Screaming Warrior" logo the Braves used before dropping it in 1988.

Some individuals who support the use of Native American mascots state that they are meant to be respectful, and to pay homage to Native American people. Many have made the argument that Native American mascots focus on bravery, courage and fighting skills rather than anything derogatory. Karl Swanson, vice-president of the Washington Redskins professional football team, declared in the magazine Sports Illustrated that his team's name "symbolizes courage, dignity, and leadership," and that the "Redskins symbolize the greatness and strength of a grand people."[

You ever heard of "The Glass Ceiling"? Remove that.

Where is their 40 Acres and a mule? Give them that.

Give them what they deserve. The Native Americans got theirs.

Understand this is why their so wroth. Because they know the truth of their history and nothing has been done to compensate. Technically, their ancestors built this country. They were slaves, treated less than human.

I want racism to end as bad as the next person, but lets face it, TPTB don't care. They put labels on us, African American, Asian American, Mexican American, etc. Whats that about? Why can we just be "Americans" Like Japanese are known as just Japanese? or like pretty much every other country who claims their own people regardless of color or ethnicity as long as you're born there.

Yet people wonder why their mad. They just want it to go away. Not gonna happen like that.

In the early 70's I was young and unskilled. I aplyed to a program called CETA for training. I did not receive any and I asked what would of qulified me to gwet training and was told if I was a female or a minority I would of getten the training, so yes white men have been getting screwed since the 70's.

Peace. There is no way that whites are more discriminated agianst than blacks (blacks, brown, red, yellow or all people of color); not in this country or any other country across the globe. People usually discriminate without any previous knowledge of the individual they are choosing to discriminate agianst. Which means they are discriminating primarily off face value reasons usually based off of appearance. The first thing dealing with appearance is the color of your skin. Whites aren't discriminated agianst for having white skin for the simple fact that the planet is under european(white) control (western capitalism, imperialism, industrialism and racism). This is the foundation of America. This article might deal with the perceptions, but the research of statistics will show that it is a fact that all people of color are discriminated agianst much more than those of european background. Discrimination is a form of prejudice (pre judge). Racism and prejudice are not the same. Racism is prejudice with power. Racism is the racial subjugation of all non whites from every area in human relations(which are all dominated by europeans in this country). If whites feel they are more discriminated agianst then they feel they are effected more by racism in this country and that would be completely foolish to believe. Study "white privledge." Whites benefit from having white skin whether they actually understand the dynamics of it or not. This simple fact shows and proves that whites could never be discriminated agianst, in any area of human relations, more than people of color. Peace.

Racism is prejudice with power.

Exactly. Like the power of the government to enforce racial discrimination and prejudice called Affirmative Action.

Tell me one thing - why should a rich black person be preferred over poor white person?

What you pointed above is not power of white people over black people. It is a power of the rich over the poor. We do not have "white privilege", we have rich privilege.

Tell me one good reason why base equalisation policies on race, instead of far more relevant and logical criterion - class. It would still include blacks more, since they are more poor than whites on average. But it would also include poor white people, and exclude rich black people.

IMO, as a white male who grew up and went to schools with 40%+ black students here is what I see as the biggest problem with race is this:

Affirmative action: Skipping over qualified individuals, usually white but I've also personally seen very qualified Asians skipped over to hire unqualified blacks. That's racist. Under no circumstances should someone under-qualified trump someone more qualified just because of their race. Likewise someone shouldn't be skipped just because of their race, but the affirmative action method only serves to exasperate racism.

Social acceptance of racism against whites: I see it at least once a week. A major crime where it's usually blacks attacking whites using racial slurs all the while. It's never prosecuted as a "hate crime", it's never called racism, it's never condemned as a racist assault.

Over punishment for white racism: A white kid tweets a racist comment they get suspended. A school basketball team chants USA and they have to write an apology. A Hispanic or black kid can call a white kid cracker in the hall and nothing happens. There is a culture in this country that there is no such thing as racism against whites. So whenever a white person does or says something stupid, there is a massive fanfare about the ignorance and bigotry of white people. A "minority" says or does something.... no one cares.

And most importantly, specifically for blacks...... there is this belief in America that blacks cannot exist or function without assistance. No other race receives half as much aid, support, or laws biased in their favor. Yet still fail miserably. But we don't blame them for their failures.. we blame white people for not paying enough taxes to cover black schools. We blame white people's great great great great grandparents for owning slaves. We blame white culture for "keeping them down" and we blame white businesses for not hiring them. Yet no other race has this issue.... thus it perpetuates the "us vs them" mentality, which in turn exasperates racism its self.

That's my view anyways..
