the possibly greatest death toll ever of a tsunami / hurricane : island of 26,000 wiped off the face of the earth ?
and nobody knows

AT least 250 people died in massive floods across northern Haiti after Tropical Storm Jeanne hit the crushingly poor Caribbean nation over the weekend, a UN spokesman said today.
Meanwhile, authorities were without news from the country's second largest island, La Tortue.
Staff from the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) could not find the island of 26,000 people while flying over the region by helicopter.

This could have been caused by the 6.1 quake under Jeanne, I mentioned before ... that nobody knows about too ...

I just wonder why it hasn't been on all the channels? 26,000 people is hard to overlook especially so close to the United States.

I've been looking for something to collaborate this - but nada so far. It seems so vague - could they not find the island because of cloud cover or because it wasn't there or because it was under water?

It probably hasn't been on the news in the United States because just about the only people in the United States that care about Haiti are Haitiens. It would get 2nd or 3rd page in the papers just like the monsoon flooding in Bangladesh.

Time to check the satellite photos though!

One of the reasons is that it is so close ... Did you know that if Ivan had hit the US 250 miles to the west, New Orleans would have been wiped out ?

It sure seems weird though. It looks as though an island with a population of 26K would be easier to find and have an airport with with homing beacons. It's quite possible they were destroyed by a tsunami, if one did occur.

I noticed the original article stated United Nations staff couldn't find the island. I believe them. The UN is good at not finding things. Isn't it amazing that some people think the UN can find things even smaller?

Don't they still have thousands of servicemen over there from after the Aristide coup?

Surely they would report back to the news agencies if something that big happened.

Well this is one of the more interesting threads I have seen on ATS yet.

Very strange and factual, if the UN can't find their second largest island then something is wrong.

Are the reports of earthquakes confirmed? They actually happened under these hurricanes??? Very very strange.

There was indeed a large earthquake in the caribbean:

Here's something else, the seismograph station in Haiti is closed. But I suppose that could be due to the storm and what-not.

Edit: Just found another intersting link. There's been a long history of Tsunami's in the Caribbean.

i've been following this Haiti situation and even though they mention the island of La Tortue in a few articles as being severely flooded, i haven't heard of the 26K people or the earthquake.. good find

I just read this on abc news

"Although there were fears of many more dead on La Tortue island, Deslorges said: "The government has been in contact with officials on La Tortue. Nothing happened there."

That story was from approx 1/2 an hour ago, or 9:15 am

But, i read other stories that say its barely visible and rescue workers can't get in. Strange

If island is under couple meters high hurricanes can well "wash"/flood it.
Water level can rise easily couple meters in low pressure areas.

That's why also these island nations are in biggest problems if sea level rises even ten twenty centimeters.

The facts :
- it's four days now after the events, and we don't get ONE single image of Hait's northern coast - the La Tortue Island, Port de la Paix, etc
- the information is being provided by puppets in thu "UN" payroll (Gerard LaTortue, and the UN brazilian and argentinian officers )

My conclusion :
- dozens thousands of deaths are being hidden.

The reason : think about it.

Talk me through it, why would they cover up thousands of deaths? They need all the help they can get right now, why would they cover up the deaths?
