IF (and this is a big IF) there is a correlation between solar activity and earthquakes, I must make the following qualifying statements:
If the correlation exists, does that mean all earthquakes are caused by solar flares? No.
If the correlation exists, does that mean all solar flares cause earthquakes? No.
These cannot be mutually inclusive. We already have evidence that supports that.
If the correlation exists, does that mean the earthquake is caused at the moment the CME hits the magnetosphere? No. Again, we already have evidence
If the correlation exists, does that mean the entire dynamic consists of only the Earth and the Sun and nothing else, as if they were in a vacuum?
No. It would be silly to exclude other factors when dealing with such large amounts of energy and mass.
If any of the statements above were "Yes." then the whole correlation would be trivial and science would have a solid understanding of this
phenomenon and it would be common knowledge. Therefore, if the correlation exists, the answer to each of the above statements MUST be "No" because
the correlation must be intricate, subtle and complex. Does "intricate, subtle and complex" mean it cannot be? No. We just do not have the right
So (and I am not a physicist nor a geologist but I am a scientist) one could make a valid hypothesis along the lines of "when the moon is at x
position or phase relative to the Earth and Sun, and a CME is incoming in rapid succession after a strong solar wind or precursor CME, and the
magnetosphere is in a certain state of flux, this causes a charge to ground at the poles leading to a disturbance at the Earth's core which ripples
outward toward the crust which may dislodge or aggravate a fault that is already under duress."
Sadly, I do not have enough data to build such a hypothesis so instead, someone like me would just observe what I can and look for patterns that may
help isolate the correlation (if one exists) so a valid hypothesis may be built.
After saying all of that, I am interested in what the OP has to say because if the OP is right then that would support some anecdotal evidence and
patterns that I have been observing for quite some time. This is also why people that scream "XYZ WILL HAPPEN ZOMG!" and the ones that refute
"THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE IT IS NOT IN SCIENCE BOOKS" are both silly.
Cannot we just open our minds and enjoy the art of observation?
