BTW, even Russian and Chinese scientists have had to get degrees in what they research. What is your degree on that you want to claim you don't want to believe what the Russians, the Chinese have to say?... and i am CERTAIN that you will TRY to make some similar excuse for every scientist who wants to contradict you...

Puterman of Phage may not have degrees in this field of study, but this guy does:

John Vidale

The seismology community generally agrees no link has been seen.

PNSN group on Facebook

This is in response to the following question:

So my question is " Is there a link between solar flares and earthquakes"

Mr. Vidale has recently signed up as a member and been posting in a few threads, Quakeswatch 2012 being one of those threads.

The papers you have linked refer to seismic precursors, which are discreet measurable events caused by early earthquake processes, not outside influences on the internal workings of earthquakes.

Now, I can conceive of CMEs possibly having triggering effect on a fault that was near to rupturing by itself, because even refrigerator magnets will move around on a table if you bring them close enough to one another.

However, since the number of quakes which occur on a daily basis does not decline during periods of solar minimum, I would have to say that the effect is negligible at best.

7.1 Earthquake just happened in Vanuatu.

Wow. First time I've seen a prediction on ATS come true.

I bet it was caused by HAARP and you're a government insider!!! (I kid.)

Last night I had a dream that there was an earthquake/tsunami. Me and my friends were outrunning it. Well, trying to get to higher ground.
There was this small walking bridge everyone was trying to cross. Obviously not a prediction because one of my friends in it is on vacation right now. Unless it's for the future. dun, dun, dun.

Actually, was a 6.7....close, but not uncommon for that area. SOURCE

Good for you.
Naysayers are on the way.
Blah blah not big, blah blah common etc.
Blah blah downgraded.

I have a prediction:
This thread is about to get really popular.
And that 7.1 is precursor.

I predict a large Earthquake that will devastate a city, located on continent at some point within the next 40 years...

I predict that I'm going to eat Chipotle today, upset my stomach, and spend the afternoon on the John....hahaha

But in all seriousness, the guy did predict a big EQ to hit in 40 hours, a big EQ did hit, I think this prediction is legit...... I feel that anything over a magnitude 7 is considered big....

Can I double S&F the OP for making a correct prediction??? haha

Folks, it was a 6.7! Calm down.

6.7 2012/03/09 07:09:53 -19.115 169.643 31.7 VANUATU

earthquake.usgs.gov... ml

And we've already shown actual links from actual science groups that say sunspots do not have anything to do with earthquakes...

Wrong on both predictions.

How often do high 6/7 earthquakes happen?

Genuinely curious, and know nothing. Anyone know of a good link to start looking into it?

NVM they happen every other week by the looks of it.

Go to drudgereport.com then go to the quake sheet on the bottom right of the website.. then go to world list.... vanuatu gets a 6, sometimes a 7 at least once a month for the last 8 months

6.7 haha that is close enough to a 7.1. just admit it. the OP was right on.

I like his prediction because it's no wuwu.
It's the freakin Sun. When the Sun erupts he has a feeling
that it's related to quakes. Just the size difference alone
between the Sun and Earth is enough to open my mind
to the possibilities. How much bigger than Earth was that CME?
It seems crazier to me to say absolutely, that there is 'no chance
that giant explosion caused the Earth to shake a bit.'

It is this refrence that scares me,,

"Magnitude 7.3
Date-Time

* Wednesday,
March 09, 2011 at

02:45:20 UTC

* Wednesday, March 09, 2011 at 11:45:20 AM at epicenter
* Time of Earthquake in other Time Zones

Location 38.440°N, 142.840°E
Depth 32 km (19.9 miles) set by location program
Region NEAR THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN

That is the one that scared me last year.

So seeing the 7.1 at Vanatu ,,,well,,,

Me.

Do you understand the difference between a 6.7 and a 7.1? Nevermind the fact that vanuatu gets 6's more times than Ive seen rain here in vegas....

It is like predicting a team will win by 30, but they in fact won by 23.. Close, but no cigar..

Isn't every .1 difference make a quake 10x stronger or something close to that... So a 7.1 is 10x stonger than a 7.0... Am i close?

jaded and cynical is right about the energy released difference between a 7.1 and a 6.7

using the formula
tonnes of TNT released=(10^(4.8+(magnitude*1.5))/4184)/10^6

7.1 = 673609.68TTNT
6.7 = 169203.10TTNT

quite a lot, almost 4 times the energy. USGS are getting worse and worse at coming out with wrong initial magnitudes

at the time USGS had 7.1 the other Global Networks had;

GFZ 6.7Mw
Seisme.nc 6.6M
EMSC 6.8Mw
Aussies on the upside 7.0Mw

If USGS said there was a M7.1 under my house I wouldn't believe it until I had pulled myself out of the rubble and checked with the other Networks

I don't think a 6.7, at sea, in a area that has a M5 almost every day rates its own thread.
I know the OP is new to ATS, but why not go over and post it there Quake Watch 2012

from this post

Interestingly enough, today March 9th, the sun just let loose a class M7 directed at earth due to arrive on the 11th so if there were any truth to CME's and earthquakes we could have another biggie on Sunday exactly one year to the day of the Fukushima incident
If CME's and earthquakes have nothing in common, we should be just fine

ETA...Sorry it was an m6 class...
edit on 9-3-2012 by minkmouse because: (no reason given)

ETA once again...I thought I read that the CME in 2011 was an M class but seems it was an X3, still where I live, the day aint done yet.
