Bill Maher is on cable television, people pay extra to get his show and know what to expect when they turn on the TV.
Rush is governed by the rules that regulate the airwaves, just as Bill Maher would be were he to have a similar type of radio show.

The uproar over Rush using the term "slut" and "prostitute."
Bill Maher calls Sarah Palin the vilest of words on his national T.V. program. I won't say it, you can look it up.
Share other examples, I heard on tape today, two of them. The Godless left, they are the walking dead. Take a moment and say a prayer for their conversion.

You, being a woman who takes birth control, should know that how much sex you have has absolutely nothing to do with how much birth control you take. The fact that you even said that makes me question if you are really a either a female or on or have ever taken birth control.
Rush said point blank, that if i, as a woman want insurance to cover my monthly birth control cost (though i refuse to take it for persnal reasons unless medically necessary) then i am a slut and a prostitute.

I don't think they are doing anything wrong either. Rush is a conservative right wing guy, his base is VERY pro PC. He put his foot in his mouth and his own fans, advertisers and sponsors turned on him, not the left.
He has himself to blame for saying something he probably should not have, considering his position/audience.
It's expected of Bill Maher to be crass, joke around and call people names, he's a comedian, not a political commentator or pundit. Although I suppose you could brand him that way.

You know, OP, I agree. There appears to be a double standard here.
You have many pointing out differences, sure. But what i comes down to is this. One person is given free reign to say whatever he wants. The other person isn't.

im not american nor do i directly care about american politics but looking from outside in, Maher is a comedian with political material. This Rush guy is a serious political member and represents to a great degree, the party he's so proud of. Maher treats everything as a joke, because hes a purposeful clown, and he admits to just as much. Rush is deliberately vicious and serious.
You go get a republican comedian to make fun of the liberals and im all ears because good material is funny. Rush however, is not a comic. Different boundaries. Its like a white comic making black jokes that cross the racism line, or vice versa. Everything has boundaries, and different people have different ones depending on how they present themselves to the public. Maher is a clown. Whats Rush?

No actually you are the one that missed the point of it altogether. The fact that you are clueless to what the debate is about proves it. The fact that you somehow think that this woman was in front of Congress testifying that her sex life is so expensive she wants you to subsidize it for her proves it. The fact that you think that the debate has anything to do with condoms or sex at all proves it. None of her testimony before Congress was about the availability of condoms for recreational sex. Which is what Rush intended his listeners to believe about it. Her testimony was about the lack of coverage for prescribed birth control and the fact that it should be treated as any other prescription because it is used to treat other real medical conditions. [snip] And took Rush's word for it on a topic that could very well prove detrimental to your own health. But go ahead and let Rush tell you how it really is, the only one your going to hurt is yourself.

Rush supposedly represents the Republican party...
I wouldn't say that. I think that is going a bit too far. I think to some people on the left, he may represent the Republican party but I think to people on the right he is just a man with an opinion who happens to be a republican. I know many republicans that do listen to Rush and think he is more than a bit extreme with many of his positions. Sort of like for every 10 things he says they like 5 of them.edit on 5-3-2012 by sageofmonticello because: (no reason given)
ABC’s George Will told me Sunday on “This Week” that GOP leaders have steered clear of harshly denouncing Limbaugh’s comments because
“Republican leaders are afraid of Rush Limbaugh.”
