Confirmed by NASA: 200ft Asteroid to Hit Earth in 11 Months, page 1

To avert a new apocalypse – this time set for February 2013 – scientists suggest confronting asteroid 2012 DA14 with either paint, or big guns. The tough part of either scheme is that time has long run out to build a spaceship for any operation.

­NASA confirms the 60-meter (197-feet) asteroid, spotted by Spanish stargazers in February, has a good chance of colliding with Earth in eleven months.

The rock's closest approach to the planet is scheduled for February 15, 2013, when the distance between the planet and space wanderer will be under 27,000 km (16,700 miles). This is lower than the geosynchronous orbit kept by the Google Maps satellite.

What are your thoughts about this?? I'm not sure if this topic belongs in 2012 but I couldn't think of any other place to put it. This is pretty breaking I might say, this news just came out some hours ago.

In my opinion I think things SWHF sooner than Feb 2013. I see Oct-Nov-Dec being crazy. People are going to riot, more so than ever, and it will hit the US, not just in other country's as we get closer to the date because people won't know how to cope knowing we're all going to be doomed anyhow. Scary times we live in. Treat one another kind with respect and dignity. Peace be to all.

Firstly "good chance' =/= 'confirmed' to hit

Also the 2012 'apocalyptic' scenario is said to span all the way up until 2014, in terms of events that is. However it's been wildly skewed from the original prophecies.

Rioting because the world is going to end? I really can't see that happening, while violence is a way of human life, and we humans love killing each other, i think if we had some kind of scientifically confirmed impact from a meteor, people would work together.

Uh, was it Ronald Reagan that once said something along the lines of perhaps we need some kind of outside threat to unite humanity?

It wouldn't surprise me if the FEMA camps that been set up recently are a result of such a potential event.
