going with that thought, sinkholes on the surface are because there is some kind of void under ground
caverns, even porous rock or voids in the strata of rocks can eventually be filled
one might imagine that Nature has been practicing hydro fracking for eons... the act of sand or water saturated dirt filling in the voids that were
once filled with stuff like natural gas.
the act of disturbing any subsurface structure (strata/caverns/water tables/underground rivers/artesian wells)
will naturally want to be filled in...which will eventually be observed at the surface terrain as a sinkhole or depression in the landscape.
perhaps a side scan radar map of the whole world should be undertaken, not only future cave-ins or sinkholes would be discovered but odd things like
elephant grave yards" might be discovered and plenty of jobs will be created
i would venture a guess that the China town with the inordinate number of sinkholes is likely sitting atop a monster cave system, likely as large as
the Lauray Caverns in VA or maybe the Mammoth Cave in KY
