GITMO Detainees get $750,000 Soccer Field

The project began in April 2011 and is due to finish this spring. The detainees will now have three recreation facilities at Camp 6, which is home to "highly compliant" detainees who live in a communal setting.

In addition to an indoor recreation field and the existing outdoor recreation field, the new soccer field -- selected because it is such a popular sport with detainees -- is half the size of an American football field.

The new field has been specially constructed so that the detainees "have maximum access" -- about 20 hours a day. Special passageways allow the detainees to pass into the new recreation yard without being escorted by the military.

America can't afford health care or education for many of it's citizens but by golly we can afford a new $750,000 soccer field for GITMO. The terrorists, after having their Baked Tandouri Chicken Breast or Fish Amandine at our expense, can go out and have a blast on the soccer field .. that we paid for. Lovely.

Flame away.

Wouldn't they call it a fútbol field since it's in Cuba?

I believe this is a story for the 'No one can make this up' list. What is the worst to my thinking...... The troops guarding the scum who remain after they've released everyone they can find a reasonable way to release will have to watch this momument to total waste being built, while their own Tricare is being jacked around with them for a claimed lack of funding.

Oh... The irony here isn't even funny!

Hey......... There is something else here. Hasn't Obama been promising to CLOSE this place since before he was elected? Yes... I've heard the quotes he uttered about absolutely closing this place replayed on the radio lately. So how does a Soccer field at 3/4 of a million dollars figure into a facility they are supposed to be working to close?

So much for another bit of that change, eh?

AWESOME point. If this is supposed to be closed down then why spend $750,000 on a soccer field? Didn't he promise to close it down immediately? Well .. it's three years later ... that closing should be any day now, right? Even if it is staying open ... that price tag is just sickening.

Is it just me or does $750,000 seem a little high for just some sod, a couple of nets, and fencing? Seems to me like some contractor with connections made out like a bandit. Reminds me of the $400,000 toilets in the White House.

Maybe its time America starts getting more civil with prisoners. Compare British prisons to American ones, its horrible.

Why such a high price tag? doesn't make sence, unless some company's (connected to the government?) can make some good money that is.

Why not a swimming pool, waterboarding we need! who knows what kind of information we can get of that and makes us safer.

Check the satellite photos of Gitmo and the Detainment camp area in particular. When you get to Gitmo bay, Camp Delta is on the eastern side of the bay, right on the open beach facing south. The whole complex there is the detainee facility. See any spare space for a sports field? Yea... I don't either. I imagine 3/4 of a million includes the terra-forming it'll take to carve out a proper flat area in the first place..within their prisoner access. THEN they can start making a soccer field out of it.

Err.. My bad.. I should have gotten this beforehand.

I suppose they won't have to literally carve it out of rough land around them.. but.. wow.. Soccer field? there? Really? lol

this is the newest addition to gitmo zoo and wildlife centre, where you can watch and observe terrorists interacting with each other in sport.

I'm not seeing this being reported on the MSM TV news at all. You'd think that something like this would get a lot of attention in an election cycle. It SHOULD. Maybe Washington is so used to piss'n our money away that they don't even blink at this.
