So when or why did prehistoric man start to believe in "gods".

When FATHER ANU and his sons LORD ENKI (EA) and LORD ENLIL (LLU) came here and were acknowledged as HIGHER ups by the unsuspecting EA*RTH inhabitants who didnt know of the COSMIC FAMILY.

You have your answer. You just choose not to accept it. As many others have stated, "Humans created God out of not knowing". If you want something to be or don't have all of the answers, then you simply fill in the blanks.

God is the ultimate blank filler.

For now.

They didn't have the knowledge to explain certain things, so they filled that gap in knowledge with magic (aka "god(s)"). It's basically "god of the gaps" spread out over billions of people

Think about it: They said god causes plagues...because they didn't understand medicine. They also claimed comets were a sign of god...which we now know is wrong too. They came up with stories like Adam & Eve...because they didn't have the knowledge (and capabilities to find out about) evolution.
