Hi this is an interesting thread. I believe you are talking about two distinct abilities here. Being able to read or see and aura is generally done with the eyes open. Here is a great tutorial on using circles you can focus on to practice the ability to see using the combination of the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Very much like when you stare at something while you're daydreaming and it kind of goes out of focus.

I believe to use one's third eye the physical eyes must be closed. There is some great information previously in this tread to enable this. Precautions are good. I remember telling my sister Liz (RIP) once that I could now see stars and create colors and images in my mind before I go to sleep at night. She tried it and was unable to make it stop and was really messed up by it. I eventually helped her to get control of it but be aware.
