Cristina Kirchner told to leave Falkland Islanders alone, by Argentina's intellectuals

At last there seems to be some sensible people in Argentina.

''Last week, Sean Penn, the Hollywood actor, appeared with President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner to criticise British actions over the disputed archipelago.

But a group of Argentina's leading intellectuals, historians, journalists, constitutional experts and politicians have published an open letter calling on their own government to rethink policy towards the islands they call the Malvinas branding it "crazy" and "absurd".

The 17 signatories accused Mrs Kirchner's government of "harassing" the Falklands population of 3,000, who overwhelmingly want the islands to remain a British Overseas Territory.''

argentina should just offer to sell it to england so both sides can save face. then negotiate a first come first serve natural resource venture.

which is what all this is about. the billions of barrels of oil that are untapped near the islands.

not the sheep farmers freezing their nuts off in sub-artic temperature.

How can Argentina sell something it does not own, never has owned and never will own? AND it has never been about the Oil as far as the UK is concerned. Argentina did not invade The Falklands in 1982 over oil.

A private Argentine report warns that the current diplomatic dispute over the Falklands/Malvinas could have an impact on bilateral trade with the UK which last year totalled over 1.4 billion dollars with a 150 million surplus for Buenos Aires.

The Argentine minister Hector Timerman presentation before the United Nations claiming the “militarization of the South Atlantic” from the Falklands by the UK does not seem to be having the expected echo according to press reports from Buenos Aires, based on correspondents’ contributions from New York.

So far the Argentine presentation has not generated ‘a single international condemnation, verbally or through a resolution’ as had been anticipated by Minister Timerman in his reports to the government of President Cristina Fernandez.

On the contrary the reply from the UN building in New York has been a resounding silence, while in Washington the US government denies any militarization in the South Atlantic and the Republican opposition in the midst of a presidential campaign is accusing President Obama of not standing up to its allies. Presidential hopeful and former governor Mitt Romney is demanding that President Obama clearly aligns with Great Britain.

it's better for england to argentina to relinquish it's claim on the falklands, than war.

it is a disputed island. the u.k. wasn't the first to claim it as it's own.

but just like any colonial power it just moved in and didn't give a sh-t.

I don't particularly mind if the US doesn't scream loudly in our favour. They have their reasons for maintaining an outwardly neutral stance and they know that we aren't exactly desperate for their support on this.

The media tends to blow the issue well out of proportion. We are far from being in a position where we have to draft in various allies to sit behind us and shake their fists around.
