SEATTLE (AP) -- An 8-year-old girl was shot in the abdomen at an elementary school in Washington state Wednesday afternoon and one of her classmates was detained, authorities said.

The injured third-grader was airlifted to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center.

Authorities said a third-grade boy was being questioned and a firearm was found in a classroom. No other details about the shooting, including the condition of the girl who was shot, were immediately available.

This sounds like it could be the parent's fault, but it certainly could be for other reasons.

I remember having a friend who's father had guns that were not hidden, and the ammo was easily accessible too. Kids that age should not have access to guns unless it is under adult supervision. The only time I had access to guns as a kid was when we went hunting.

Some parents put too much trust in their children and this is what ends up happening.

Happened in my county, Kitsap. Kid had taken a .45 from his mother's house (broken home) saying he needed it for protection as he was running away. The gun discharged inside his backpack and hot the girl. Comments on the local newspaper site suggest the kid was already a troublemaker at eight, but there's no official information about him yet. This all happened yesterday.

This morning a state trooper was shot and killed in a routine traffic stop in the same county. His alleged shooter committed suicide a short time later. The day before yesterday a guy shot and killed a 76 year old in Poulsbo (same county), because the old guy had made 'sexual advances' toward him, and a week or so before that police shot and killed a young man who had a gun at a NAPA auto parts store also in Poulsbo. A few days ago a 61 year old woman was knifed and killed in Bremerton near where the student was shot. Indications are that the same guy was responsible for one other death and a stabbing earlier

People around here are feeling pretty beleagured right now. We've got the usual meth heads and such, but the county as a whole is not a high crime area, or at least wasn't.
