A celebrated American-born war reporter and a young French photographer were killed on Wednesday morning when Syrian forces bombed a makeshift media center in the besieged city of Homs. The tragedy shook the disparate community of conflict journalists gathered there, not least in highlighting the degree to which risks are intensifying for those covering Syria's march to civil war.

Marie Colvin, an American who was one of Britain's most honored combat journalists, and Rémi Ochlik, an award-winning photojournalist who was just 29, died when the regime's military hit the building where a growing number of foreign journalists were covering the Homs battle. British photographer Paul Conroy, whose work illustrated Colvin's chilling dispatch from Homs in the London Sunday Times last weekend, was reported severely injured, along with an unnamed American woman journalist. Those details have not yet been confirmed.

Within seconds of the news breaking on the BBC and Syrian Twitter feeds, the closed Facebook group for conflict journalists lit up with frenzied messages, many of them unable to believe that their colleagues were gone. And Colvin's own Facebook site was jammed with messages from friends, one saying, "Please God not Marie! Marie are you OK?"

Sad that this happened, but it's a risk the journalists take while entering a war-zone. I was under the impession that journalists were not allowed to enter the country. (Unless they sneak in with rebel help).

Any chance the west will use this incident as a way to push for more action against Syria? I think it is highly likely. What will the next step be? Im not too sure.

Time to call in the NATO strikes because the UN Said So. Not sure how much longer they will just stand by. This is far worse than anything that happened in Libya. Day after Day

I think our aim is to let Syria and Assad fall as quickly as possible so we can cut the cord completely. Iraq, Egypt, LIbya, Syria. We was our hands and move on. We've got spec ops forces based in 4 countries in Central Africa right now. That will be our new focus and new theater of combat.

False flag (aka Black Flag) operations are covert operations designed to deceive in such a way that the operations appear as though they are being carried out by other entities. The name is derived from the military concept of flying false colors; that is flying the flag of a country other than one's own. False flag operations are not limited to war and counter-insurgency operations and can be used during peace-time

NATO did this by dressing thousands of its soldiers up in Syrian uniforms, commandeering Syrian tanks and helicopters and bombarding Hom while the real Syrian army stood by in shocked silence.

I've seen this documentary about this journalist who was in homs and told the story that Assad's army specifically targeted him and other journalists in this area. he was rescued by the opposition and barely made it alive.

He spoke of man that appose as opposition army but were not.they told him and the French reporter what direction to move , when he and the Frenchman followed the sign. Assad's man shelled them, and other opposition fighters , the Frenchman died but he and other colleague not.

If it's on Syrian state TV, it must be true.

The pink shirt is the give away. First thought in my mind was that it must be the Syrian government broadcasting that stuff.

Then perhaps you can identify the logo on the upper right. It says "Sham," but it doesn't match the logo of al Sham, the independent Syrian network. Perhaps it's a sham al Sham.
