Great post OP!
I was just thinking about this today while watching something on 2012. What doesn't make sense to me is that if there is some unavoidable destruction headed our way that will wipe out the planet, what is the point in not telling us? So what if there is mass chaos, everyone is going to die anyway.
"Personally, and years ago my answer would have been the opposite, if I knew...I would not tell the public."
Why not? Wouldn't it actually make more sense (let's assume our leaders have no plan) to get the info out to as many people as possible to see if anyone has any ideas. What do we have to lose?
Let's say you had access to a bunch of information that pointed to the utter and complete destruction of life as we know it on this planet.
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” -Joseph Goebbels
