Putin Pledges 400 ICBMs for Russia in Ten Years

en.ria.ru

Russia’s armed forces will receive over 400 modern intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), more than 100 military spacecraft and over 2,300 new tanks within the next ten years, Prime Minister and presidential candidate Vladimir Putin said.
Earlier media voiced fears that by 2020, Russia’ ICBM arsenal could reduce by more than half as over 400 missiles would go beyond their maximum service life without timely replacement.

Well Putin is certainly doing some posturing. Still think the Cold War ended in the 90's?

"“Within the next decade, the armed forces will receive more than 400 modern ground- and sea-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, eight ballistic missile submarines, about 20 general purpose attack submarines, over 50 surface ships and some 100 military-purpose spacecraft,” Putin wrote in a new article for the Rossiiskaya Gazeta government daily.
He said the number will also include “over 600 modern aircraft, including fifth-generation fighters, more than a thousand helicopters, 28 regimental sets of S-400 [SA-21 Growler] surface-to-air missile systems, 38 division sets of Vityaz air defense systems, 10 brigade sets of Iskander-M (SS-26 Stone) tactical missile systems, more than 2,300 modern tanks, some 2,000 self-propelled artillery systems and guns, as well as more than 17,000 military vehicles.”"

Pretty big expansion if you ask me. Then they remind us;
"Chief of the Russian General Staff, Army Gen. Nikolai Makarov said on February 15 that Russia would use nuclear weapons in response to any imminent threat to its national security."

Seems like the thoughts of nuclear war may be heating up once again. Let's pray that we're smart enough not to use them ever again.

Interesting for sure, but hardly surprising.

NASA is not the only agency in the US that has space craft. The DoN (department of the navy) as well as the USAF have far more going on above earths atmosphere tan NASA, and that's for certain.

What this says to me is that Russia is serious about space as a military frontier. And why wouldn't they be? If you control the skies above a nation you control what they do on the ground. If you control the space above the sky, above a nation you control everything. Space is a serious piece to control on the global chessboard, kind of like the queen. She can. Move everywhere, kill everything, and is ready to die for her king. In space you can move anywhere, kill everything below you, and it's unnecessary to die because your 60 miles above everyone. Checkmate.

I'm so glad the US is committed to decreasing the US nuclear arsenal while our "enemy" increase theirs.

I wish someone would just develop a super nuke or something that one small bomb would destroy the whole darn planet.

I see this as a response to the military space program in USA and the missile defense shield. Russia has given USA warnings on many occasions not to go through with the missile defense shield. The things about threats is that they have to be credible. So, when USA ignored the concerns Russian officials had, they forced their hands into action against them.

Also, BRIC is gaining momentum economically. It makes sense for them to support their weapons-producers. Because when dealing with weapons they can enforce protectionism. In this way they can actually give their industries comparative advantages. Some of the increased military spending comes because some countries have run into better economic times.

Not the case, this is simply a response to the USA having already moved to this phase, the 400 ICBMS are to increase their ability to even hit the United States with an ICBM, Russia is currently very out-gunned by us, they have slipped far behind our potential counter measures are not that silly missile shield we are talking about EM and microwave responses that likely would cripple most of Russias missiles instantly, what Putin is talking about is rebuilding to 400 missiles that can effectively defeat our current capacities and strike the USA currently no more than 25 can and they are facing that low level anti missile shield as well, in regards to space it's an answer to our already deployed military shuttle, imagine what one EM weapon can do floating right above your head?

We have all but eliminated MAD Putin is just announcing how fast he can put it back in place.

The US is still decreasing its nuclear stockpile. Russia is not decreasing, if not increasing, it's at least updating. I don't think that their systems are that susceptible to any EM, microwave attack by the US.

hehehe russians.

Really though.

Anybody left alive in Russia who can build those? or at least do the math behind 'em?

Russia is so far behind what Western Media reports. they have less ICBM capabilities than the UK

no offense to any UK'ers, my point is valid though. UK is a small island, Russia a massive country... almost primitive peoples these days. Without access to internet or free information...

Sputnik was a long time ago =]

Great analogy

-----

OP says it all. These new ICBMs will be advanced enough to allow for the decomissioning of over half of the remaining SRF's fleet. In the long run, it saves money while deploying more advanced weaponry.

It would be illogical for Russia not to modernize its forces.

EDIT: The post above me really begs for a negative star button.

Weird. In normal counties before the elections politicians promiss better things for people. In Russia it is the promisses of more weapons that surely means less things for people.
Of course all politicians lie so complete the logical concusions yourself.
However it is weird that one will promiss more weapons to gain public support before the elections. Yay comrades we will spend lots of money not on education or health which suck, but on new weapons that would either rust like Soviet ones or be involved in huge war killing most of people on this planet. Hooray, comrade Putin we will vote for you?

Careful what you wish for you might just get it! Research into the Thermonuclear Cobalt Bomb

"The Cobalt Bomb is capable of wiping out life on earth. It explodes and emits long-lasting and lethal gamma radiation, the most energetic radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum."

Then theres antimatter weapons right around the cornor, those babys really could crack Mother Earth like a wallnut!!!!

Infact I would like both US and Russia to have 1 of these candy packs. That way we all know that MAD is in place and earth will be finished if these are used. Then the humanity can focus on other issues like medical sciences, global warming, cleaning up pollution etc. No need to spend trillions on weapons. Takes 10 years to build and 10 seconds to destroy. Humanity deserve much more "coddle and care" than making killing machines.

Have to remember though, human beings have never invented/rediscovered a tool that they have not used. Down that path lies the destruction of our present epoch. Its our way of thinking, greed, fear, hatred of one another that needs to change.

Cobalt bomb has been tested in very small size but never atmospherically. The idea was abandoned soon after it was tested. However, in these days of computer simulations of nuclear explosions, anyone with capability can test any bomb without the need of actual physical explosion.

Anti matter weapons are possible only on paper. To make 250 grams of anitmatter it would take 2 billion years with current technology. So we are all safe for now.

A newest model of Topol-M's costs only $3M at the most. That means for $3B, Putin can have 1000 T's.

Who says they do not have them already.

Do not be too sure about MAD out of the picture. 'Cause when the incoming hundreds hitting the land have Russian language captions, then you will have only few minutes left..........to get really MAD!

Straight up, and this time around China is going to be playing a MUCH bigger role in this war now that they're Superpower Status.
