IMO the "diplomat attacks" were quite amateurish and failed, and the assassinations of the 4 or so Iranian nuclear scientists previously were very professional and successful. I tend to believe the Iranians but with no evidence it is just my opinion based on intuition..
Who do you believe?

i wouldn't put it past any spy agency to target it own citizens.

in their eye's a minor wounding of a relatively non important diplomat vs. the nuclear armament of a mortal rival and a threat to the existence of their state is a no brainer.

especially since the attacks on these diplomats amounted to nothing more than throwing a firecracker in the back seat of their cars.

both scenarios are possible.
