Pretty big quake just hit between northern Japan and Kamchatka somewhere...

Waiting on USGS....estimate 6+, maybe even 7, probably 6.5 or so, dunno...

Magnitude increased to 7.2...and depth now 122 km....

Big quake just hit near PNG area.

Estimate: 6.3 to 6.7, maybe higher.

a 7.2 and 6.8, not good. Not good at all. Violates at least one mag separation rule. Seriously, lookout in PNG, big massive one could be coming.

So a 7.2 and 6.6 after first reviews, still not good. That's .6 difference, which is still not hitting the 1 mag rule usual difference between main shock and closest aftershock. And that's being conservative. It's usually 1.2 to 1.5 mag difference.

And it appears there have been no aftershocks at all, not even a peep, cause I been watching live seismo feeds. That also suggests something else is up- as if neither was a main shock, but rather, foreshocks. I dunno, we'll see. Give it two to three days, and the warning's off if nothing else happens there.

Maybe I haven't been paying sufficient attention to the quake threads to know the answer.

However, is there ANY USGS page that's remotely as attractive and useful as the old maps were?

It's really close to infuriating to try and make sense out of the USGS site any more GRRRR.

Sigh.

Pretty big size quake just hit near Guam.

Estimate, hard to say, only one station, but looking like 6.2 to 6.6, not sure...

Hmm, guess it was smaller. That's good. EMSC has it at 5.2. But darnit that pushed that station in Guam into clip, at over 3e7.


Aha! EMSC just upped it to 5.4. No usgs yet.
