Has anyone noticed the increased amount of military commercials on t.v over the last few weeks? Even on kids channels like Nick. Your thoughts?

Its happening on Australian TV as well. Lots of ads telling people to join the army. There is one ad which shows normal people working but with the army uniform underneath. They want everyone to join the reservers so they have lots of back-up soldiers. Its interesting how there pushing it and how there making it look fun.

Kind of strange considering that the military budget is about to be slashed. Unless....it ratchets up again after a conflict with Iran begins.

I was just about to say something similar...
it's very odd considering how we're supposed to be bringing troops home.
We all should know that a war with Iran is very likely, perhaps imminent. And war with Iran, would probably bring China and Russia.
Yeah, they're most likely recruiting for a war that's been in the making since 1979.
We have been in a state of national emergency with respect to Iran since then. Check the Federal Register if you want to verify that.

Oh, I believe it. Our screwed up relationship with Iran actually goes back to the 1940s. If you include Britain, it goes back way farther than that.
Of course, if you want to get really nuts, we could go back to Marathon and Thermopylae!

I work with lots of veterans and active duty soldiers. You'd be surprised by the variety of viewpoints and the independence of thought by most U.S. soldiers.
I regret never joining. I'm a bit too old now.
But you get some good job skills training, great lessons in leadership and self confidence. And the free college. However, it is obviously dangerous. And, of course, death, permanent disfigurement, and the possibility of having to do some morally questionable stuff are pretty good deterants.

They make everything look like a video game.

What really gets my goat is the new Navy commercial - The US NAVY a Global force for good.

WTH? "global force for good?""

The school year is almost finished so people who have little to no prospects are looking for something to do, Enter : The army.

Plus the the 8 year terms are up for all the soldiers who signed up for Iraq in 2003. Probably going to leave a big shortfall.

I was thinking the same thing. Then there's that "Act of Valor" movie that's obviously shallow war-porn for angsty adolescents that's clearly valuable as a recruiting mechanism given the "real active-duty SEALS" tagline being advertised everywhere you look.

I'm thinking the major cut back is little more than a token gesture and soon after any cuts there will be a massive build up that not only negates the cuts but surpasses "post 9/11" numbers.

I had to decide on enlisting in 2002 and almost did decide to go.

If I could now, it would be an even harder choice. I really don't like how things have played out in the middle east since 2002 but I also know how god awful it is as a young person in this market.

I wouldn't want to be deployed and have to live everyday facing an IED at any moment, though that fate would depend on what role / branch of the military you went for.

And how, sir, did you serve our Fine Nation? If you don't mind me asking. Of course you can imagine my having a Hampton or Virginian draw, you know, for sophistication effect. Pray tell, your first wet shorts story with incoming direct fire.

Well, I haven't lived through any direct threats of invasion on my property so....

As far as some inane national pride goes, it's just that. The greatness of any nation is rooted in convincing many to believe. Like any cult, ponzi scheme or paper currency. All you have to do is believe. Therefore it is valueless.

National pride is like racial pride. Be proud of your accomplishments, your talents, your skills. Not because you fell out of your mothers vagina in a geographic region or because you just did what some guy in a uniform told you to do. A uniform that has the same value as that ponzi scheme, currancy or that cult.

The soldier class ideology has been a tool of manipulation for tens of thousands of years. It's a sad testament to how far man has not come that being shot because somebody told you to is still a source of pride and obedience an attribute to aspire to.

I don't understand why we should be seeing more commercials aimed at recruitment when we have an administration hell bent on cutting our troop level by 500,000 over several years. 80,000 trimmed from the Army alone over the next 5 years plus talk of early buyouts etc etc. and the cutting of 6 Marine Corps Battalions and the elimination of 11 fighter squadrons.

Good reply. As far as I'm concerned, the ads are coming stronger because war with Iran IS going to happen. TPTB still have no clue whether or not Russia and/or China will step up and defend Iran. The US has been mouthing off in front of cameras, fluffing her feathers, anyone who does not see a war is on the horizon is beyond ignorant, and I do not mean to demean, but all of MSM has been spoonfeeding us the usual dribble about weapons and the boogeyman and peoples rights...being...violated...wow, for a second I thought I was describing the US...timing is everything. Movies, literature, MSM with their analysts saying war is imminent so on and so forth, it is in front of our faces. In fact, I think it is say the war with Iran has started, (just can't talk about it yet). Oh in a few weeks MSM will have the fancy graphics and horror flick soundtrack and "Operation Oil" plastered on the screen, with a reporter on a secured Hollywood movie set and Puerto Ricans in Iran duds yelling "Death to America". Thats my POV.
