Advanced Propulsion ??

I have always wanted to research advanced propulsion systems, however when I graduated 10 years ago it was in business. I am thinking about going back to school, in order to pursue my dream. Can anyone help me regarding what academic curriculum to pursue? Would it be physics? I am wanting to eventually get a PHd

I studied aeronautical engineering - advanced propulsion sounds cool....where are you ? Uk /USA?
