Did you hear this story about a guy who, years ago, murdered his wife (and got away with it), but then just recently, killed his two boys and himself?

Apparently, in 2009, he offed his wife during a camping trip, but got away with it.
Then, later, one of the boys drew a picture of camping, and when the teacher asked "Where's your mommy?", the kid answered, "Mommy is in the trunk".

So, with the cops closing in, he offed himself and his sons...

On Sunday, just hours after the deaths of Charlie and Braden Powell and their father, several news media outlets were reporting that one of the children had made a drawing depicting a family outing that indicated their mother, Susan Cox Powell, was in the trunk of a vehicle.
She disappeared in 2009 while the family lived in West Valley City, Utah. She has never been found, and police in Utah named Josh Powell as a “person of interest” in the case.
The boys’ grandfather, Chuck Cox, has said Braden, the younger of the two Powell children, had drawn a picture the summer after his mother’s disappearance. The drawing showed three people in a vehicle.

So, in either 2009 or 2010, the dad of the woman had a good idea her hubby killed her?
I don't know about you, but if I was Grandpa, and the cops weren't doing it, I might have enacted a little "frontier" justice....(and those kids would still be alive)....

Asked where his mother was, he replied, “Mommy is in the trunk,” Chuck Cox said Monday. He said Braden said the vehicle stopped somewhere and that his mother got out and never came back, Cox said.

heartwrenching story.

he was a suspect, never charged with the murder, wife is still considered missing and his father (the grandfather) is a sick psycho path P.O.S. who either killed the women himself or he and his son did it together, I doubt that though since the grandfather was in love with this man's wife, wrote a sick twisted haunting song about it, (it may be on youtube) and the son may have gotten jealous, it's a really horrid story and those poor baby boys, how can he of done this, terrible and sad, I cry at the thought of those two little helpless boys, God Bless their little souls.

That sick p.o.s grandfather knows where she is, and he's not talking.

I heard of that story, but not the one the OP brought up. These 2 are connected?

This story just keeps getting weider and weider.

Like one person stated, if the guy was so heart set on killing himself, then "Why did he empty his bank account? The child may have been coached. Not saying he was. But, the father left nothing for nobody to get their hands on, children, and money. Or he skipped town. I would at least wait for the DNA evidence to provide proof that father did in fact kill himself.

If you're going to off yourself, you're not going to worry about your bank account. You're just going to do it. I mean he only had $7,000 in the account.

I think he was going to run, then changed his mind.

Here's a snippet from ABC news:

"The four ladies that were supervising that activity said, 'well, what's this?' 'That's us going camping.' 'Who's in the car?' And Braden said, 'that's Daddy, that's Charlie, that's me'. Then he said, 'well mommy's in the trunk.' Well if Mommy's in the trunk, why is she in the trunk?' He didn't know, he didn't say, I guess. Then, he said we stopped somewhere and mommy and daddy got out and mommy didn't come back."

To clarify, there's two grandfathers here also, so can't mix them up.

The grandfather on the dad's side is a sicko, and went to jail for child porn charges.
The grandfather on the mom's side was taking care of the kids.

True, but the kid's commentary is pretty chilling. Sure, the kid was little at the time, but man, that's just an eerie little story, and could you imagine what that would do to a kid? If that happened.

With his death, I think it's pretty safe to assume he was most likely guilty here. Surely if he wasn't, he would have left some kind of message to the contrary in his goodbye

I agree completely.

He said in his last phone message that he was "Sorry for everyone he hurt". He went after his sons with a hatchet before he died, I say this guy had very very serious issues.

I do think his father was involved as well. The police should do there best to investigate any part he may have had in the wife's disappearance.

I'm watching my 8 month old daughter play on the floor as I type this and I can't imagine what type of person could ever have the heart to hurt a child. The autopsy on his sons said they ultimately died of smoke inhalation but they had "chop" marks on their necks that looked as if they were cause by an ax. That is sick as sick gets.
I always wished people that people who were intent on "murder - suicide" were dyslexic. There would be a lot less victims.

I think the Dad did that as a way to end the misery, he clearly thought that they wouldn't suffer, it was 3 minutes after the lady dropped the children off and the explosion, sounds to me the hatchet thing was a desperate insane attempt to kill them quicker, OH MY GOD just typing that makes my stomach turn, I have read about this before he seemed to love those kids, what happened for him to turn to such a horrific thing, poor little boys, really breaks my heart and the social worker who was dropping them off, imagine what she must be going thru and the grandmother who convinced the little ones to go because they didn't want to.

What some parent don't understand about little ones is they may not remember everything at that age,or they may remember and can't explain it like an adult,but some things are seared into their memories and no matter how long ago will remember.

Some parents really think their children aren't looking or paying attention to situations and that is a big mistake.
Children do see,and understand when something is not right,they "get it"better than adults.

such a sad sad situation all around,why do people take such drastic measures in domestic problems?why do they resort to murder...

Mike Powell declined to say Tuesday whether detectives had heard about or seen the drawing. “I am not able to discuss anything pertinent to the investigation,” said Powell, who is not related to Josh Powell. “We want to maintain the integrity of the investigation.”

Such a shame on so many levels.
The investigation is plenty late in my opinion. The guy was a suspect in his wife's disappearance so why anyone left him alone with those children while an investigation was ongoing I don't know.
The kids drawing of mommy in the trunk at daycare was given to his father, the killer? How messed up is that?
Apparently the child was 2 when this happened to his mother. He might not have been able to speak or draw and so cops would not question him. Later on the child remembered clearly what happened to him at 2 and was drawing it out. Of course he did not suspect his father of wrong doing, could not even imagine it - he gave his father the drawing. I wonder if there were any predictors of this insanity on the part of the father when he was a child, such as animal torture or abuse, fire starting. Hard to believe a "normal" man can go this far off the rails. He clearly had no conscience at all. I wonder if he ever did?

I don't think he actually drew her in the car, but since she was missing from the picture, the person asked, and he answered where she was.

It was a mini van so no trunk then the kid said they went for a walk and mommy didn't come back?? Sounds like coaching from 2 different people to me. Couldn't tell each other what they were coaching the kid to say and didn't know it was a mini van

Well if the case was in 2009 and no evidence was found, what do you expect? Obviously the kids were going back to live with daddy, and rightly so. Tragically, as it turns out, daddy was a loon but to legislate on the off chance that daddy is a loon would set a horrible precedent in any future cases where a remaining parent has been arrested for something.

Unless there is violence or abuse, kids are always better off with the parents than someone else. The simple fact is they had no evidence to tie him to the murder.

There is always that... All too often, social workers coach kids into saying bull, that then gets them taken away from their parents.

Though, in this case, the hubby's actions pretty much speak for themselves, and leave little doubt that he killed his wife. Anyone who can kill their own kids is certainly the type for it.
