Would you explain to me how this violates the convention against torture? If it does, I'll get right on the phone to my Canadian family members and demand a protest from them.

I would have thought it was obvious: by condoning the actions of third party torturers and accepting information gained by torture, they are thereby condoning torture.

Dear aorAki,

Thanks for getting back to me. I can't quite see it yet, it's not as obvious to me. (See my signature.) The agreement says that the signatories agree not to use any information obtained through torture in court. I haven't found the provision that says they can't use information from torture conducted outside their territory if they don't use it in court.

But maybe I've just missed it.

Consider the source of the information.

Torturer pulls off a finger nail and asks if the victim is part of terror group.

Victim says no

Another fingernail comes off

Victim says yes, but, please, no more fingernails.

Torturer grins and asks who the co-conspirators are.

Victim says he doesn't know.

Another fingernail comes off.

Victim starts naming names he knows, but please don't pull out another nail.

Torturer thinks he's getting somewhere and grabs the acetylene torch.

Yup, really useful information because most victims would eventually be selling out their old innocent grandma.

That's the problem I have with this story.
