Australian defence spending puts Canada to shame

fullcomment.nationalpost.com...

Although Canada’s economy is nearly twice the size of Australia’s – and has about 40 per cent more people – Canada lags far behind in defence spending.

Australia spent $29 billion on its armed forces last year. That is about $7 billion more than Canada did. Given the relative size of the two economies and populations, for the federal government to match Australia on defence spending would require an annual out-lay of between $35 billion and $40 billion, rather than the $22 billion that was spent last year.

There are reasons why Australia spends more.

And people say "Australia has a military"?
This is just an interesting article mostly for the Canadians to compare their military, but it also really shows just how serious Australia takes the "Rise of China".
The article also goes on to say this;

Australians have more tanks and attack helicopters, which are something Canadian commanders could have made great use of in Afghanistan. The air forces are broadly similar, too, although Australia has more of just about everything – from C-17 transports and mid-air refuelling aircraft to F-18 fighter jets – and has 24 F-18 Super Hornets, for which Canada has no equivalent. The gap will widen further as the Aussies plan to acquire 100 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters.

The Canadians are next to the US so they count on us for their defense, thus savings money so the socialists can spend it instead.

Canada's Medicare and education spending puts Australia to shame.
I know what I would rather invest in.

Yeah, plus Australia was in very real danger of being invaded by Japan in WWII so I imagine that has something to do with the mentality to spend more on military.

why does it even matter? Canada is in NATO.

Australias closer to actual beligerents whereas we live right next to worlds largest military force.

This article doesn't mention the amount we (Oz) WASTED on the Collins class submarine before it became actually usable :-p

Collins Class Submarine

The damn things were so noisy they were scaring the kangaroos

Not to mention many questionable air force purchases (Blackhawks etc) which they worked out after purchase didn't really have the fuel capacity to be viable in a huge empty country like Oz and had to be refitted at taxpayer expense...

Defence spending doesn't always equal greater defense!

And regardless, China will never invade us as it is cheaper for them just to buy the resources! Perhaps a lesson the US could learn hrm?

Canada don't worry much about war and has many friends. Now why would they want more bombs and killing machines The money they save could be used to help there people in every way.

Up until a few years ago, Canada was well known and respected on the Global scene as Peace Keepers.

The Previous PM told the US to Stuff it on attacking Iraq.

Harper is a US Lap-dog, he got involved in Afgan.

So does Australia, but we buy the bombs in order to deter Australia from invasion. The proof for that is because Australia has never invaded nor started a war with another country.
Australia is building its military to counter China, which it seems Canada is doing little to nothing.

There are reasons why Canada spends less, I think is a more fitting way to put it.

Not a fan of , mine is bigger threads, but Aus needs to spend about 7 times what they spend, just to match China.

Dont sweat China, they dont want Aus, but another foreign army just recently arrived I hear.

No not really, when you put into account the rest of the world Australia does quite nicely;
Health:
Canada:6
Australia:16
Education:
Canada:51
Australia:58

Not much of a big difference between the two countries especially when you put into regard that Canada's population is almost double that of Australia's and that they pretty much only rely on America for protection which leaves them much more money.

It is not China that Aus worries about. Indonesia is a much bigger concern. She has thousands of large fishing vessels that can be pressed into service as troop transports. Aus is a big country with a coast line that is horrendous from a defense point of view.

The reason we are doing "little to nothing" is that we aren't threatened by the Chinese rising to power, My wifes uncle is the CEO of Enbridge, the biggest oil company in Canada, guess who their number two is in oil exports?....China! If we were afraid of the chinese why would we be selling them massive amounts of oil and we are even in the process of building an oil pipeline to western canada for easier exporting to China. Canadians rely on the US for protection and at the same time it saves all our defence bills so that money can go to medicare and education. You guys fight the wars, we will send a unit and a couple helicopters over for public relations, meanwhile we will keep our money and spent it appropriately and not fall into total economic debt and also maintain our reputation with nations abroad, something Americans will never know.

Not trying to be racist or too honest here, but universities in Australia consist of 75% Chinese students. What will happen when they begin climbing the corporate, military and governmental ladders? The Chinese have already won imo and all without pulling a trigger.
