It seems the Russians are not confirming the breakthrough as of yet.

It is not yet clear whether Russian scientists have succeeded in their quest to drill into Lake Vostok. National media on Monday reported a breakthrough into the lake, the largest of more than 300 bodies of liquid water buried under Antarctica's ice. But Valery Lukin, the Russian Antarctic programme director, has told Nature journal that the claim is premature. He said data from a number of sensors monitoring the drilling had yet to be analysed. "Only when I will have this I can say we penetrated [the lake]," Nature quoted him as saying. "We want to be sure we have really reached the surface of Lake Vostok."

Reread the entire post, I said complex life, reading the article shows they've already found single cell organism's.

If they find multicellular complex life forms that use alternative food sources it would prove that even trapped in a bubble life will find a way.

Thats a much different reaction. Do the same experiment only this time don't open the beer shake it. You'll see that same beer freeze up before your eyes. It's not the exposure to oxygen that does it, it's excitation of the carbonation.

It has to do with impurities in the beer at temps near or below freezing, and if you put a whole case in there not all 24 beers will freeze at the same temps.

But it's a moot point on lake Vostok as the water is 65 degree's, good lake swimming temp actually.

They think geothermal activity is keeping the lake warm.

I have a couple of questions and hope you people can direct or answer/hypothesize on these:

I remember that under the sheet of ice they said there was obviously "the lake" and also rivers. If all rivers lead to the ocean then can't they just find where it drains at? If that's the case and it does drain into the ocean how is the water being replenished at the lake? Is it because of the ice sheet melting and dripping into the lake or something else?

Have they considered sending a little robotic vehicle with a camera to survey the lake and see wha't down there? Do you guys think their may be mammals/crustaceans/fish living in the lake? If so, what do you think their source of food is?

I doubt there are any mammals living down there as I would imagine it not having any light source for them to live and survive. There may be microscopic light or weird fish down there that don't need light though.

I'm also wondering what the water pressure might be down there? I would imagine that divers wouldn't be able to go down there or they may be crushed (once the whole is opened a little bigger).

Would any of you guys have the balls to volunteer and free dive into that lake? I know I wouldn't.

Now that animation shows that...

Starting from a depth pf 3,500m and higher, ice moves at a speed of 3 meters a year on the surface

And since they started the current Hole 5G in 1993 that means the surface has moved 54 meters

So how did they keep that hole open with such lateral movement?

Ill bet you they will start making Vodka from Vostok water as soon as they can pump some out.

Heres some footage from RT. Theye look the same by the thumbnails but they are different videos.

Wonder what sort of news we'll here from this. Hopefully something since Russia is usually hush hush about everything.

They've still yet to 100% rule out the microbial life found in the deeper ice cores as containments.

You know, they have classified Lake Vostok. They took it away from JPL who were monitoring it. Are you familiar with Lake Vostok in Antarctica? Under the ice in Antarctica there is a fresh-water lake deep, deep down under the ice, that’s 100 miles long and 50 miles wide. Fresh water. The temperature in the damn lake is about 65 degrees, which is pleasant swimming, you might say.

This Whole thing SCREAMS to me the story "The Mountains of Madness" by Lovecraft in which a cataclysmic discovery is found in subterranean tunnel network way beneath the ice... Holding the "Old Ones" and all the crazy creatures Lovecraft always references. The story even has a nice piece of radio silence while the team members are killed, and later the whole story of discovery is covered up do to the extreme repercussions of what was discovered.

Either way, I feel the only true way to know what all the discoveries are from this lake, is to be there. Possibilities of complex life surviving would most likely never make it to news.

In theory it makes sense, but remember they are in the arctic, those connections to the ocean(known as tributaries) are also covered with miles and miles of ice. that would be a lot more ground to cover and would actually be way harder and take way longer. Instead of 30 years it would probably take 90 if they did that. Look at the map on the first page at how far inland it is and the tributaries that connect it to the ocean. The would actually have to almost go past it and come back down. Would be pretty much impossible.

EDIT:not trying to make you feel dumb. it honestly was a pretty logical question at first thought

Very interesting and hope they come up with something that is worth the time and effort they put into uncovering this lake. Arctic region always intrigues me, especially when taking into consideration the mysterious events surrounding Richard Byrd. I definitely think Russian Government knows that there is something significant in Antarctica that is being hidden from us by the U.S. government and Russia is not about to sit back and let it remain a secret. This is a step in the right direction.

Im sorry guys I guess I though this was Arctic lake, not Antarctic. So much for making an impression with my first post! lol smh
