BREAKING: U.S. Closes embassy in Syria

The State Department shuttered its embassy in Syria and pulled out its remaining staff Monday after the government refused to address its security concerns, senior State Department officials tell CNN.

The officials said 17 employees, including Ambassador Robert Ford, left the country. Two employees flew out of the Syria last week by commercial air, with the rest of them, including Ford, traveling by convoy Monday morning to Jordan. Most of the staff were evacuated earlier in the year, and the diplomatic team was furth

Well finally it seems like the US might actually be taking action in Syria.

Or perhaps not:

The move does not mean Washington is breaking diplomatic ties with Damascus. Although contacts between the two governments are minimal, formal relations will remain in tact. The US did not break ties with Tripoli during the NATO campaign against Moammar Gadhafi. Closing the embassy means only the US is pulling its staff and suspending operations in the country.

Although considering the tensions that could create between China & Russia, I think they will be moving quite cautiously over the next couple of days.

It's unfortunate that these protesters are facing the full force of this regime without any assistance from anybody.

Thoughts?

Do you think that the US will eventually use the arm of NATO to put boots on the ground? Do you think Russia or China will threaten their own kind of action if that is to take place?

The embassy never should have been opened to begin with back in 2009/2010. I now know why it was opened in the first place. Our State Department is very good at sowing the seeds of discontent from within. Ford is a seasoned pro but, I thought he was pulled out of Syria back in October due to death threats.

I think that we want to cut the head off of Syria ASAP and that we will go outside of the UN to do it. The Arab League has issued the call and action will be certain in one form or another. We have other interests to pursue in that part of the world. Areas that have been neglected for far to long by the international community. The US is only there to clear the way for another regime just like in Egypt (now the Muslim Brotherhood) and in Libya (another potential stronghold for the MB).

I am surprised they didn't close sooner.

Has anyone on ATS been following the tweets on twitter. For several days, the CIA sponsored Muslim Brotherhood, the NWO's tool for suppression in the middle east, has been attacking people in Damascus, beheading chidren, murdering doctors, nurses, wounded, setting the hospital on fire was one tweet, and they started by poisoning the drnking water, just like in Egypt, Libya. They want to force them under the Burka and the whole world too I guess. Its a slaughter house.

And I've been waiting for a thread on ATS, been following this elsewhere, and its just heart breaking. Its gone far beyond what I'm able to accept here on this planet. To me, at this point, all of our leaders are our mortal enemies and its now self defense, we must never comply with their plans, ever.

We must end this Black op tryanny of control and the bankers, bildenbergs. We must end their love for repression of the human race.

We must make it really clear, that NO we're not going back to the primitive ancient past of abuse and control and cutting off heads and hands, while they fly around in UFO's like gods!!!!! NO! NO! NO!

Someone had brought up that in the Bible it says Damascus is destroyed and TPTB really want to make revelations come true and suppress humanity for the next cycle, we can move forward into the cosmos or we can have the whole primitive reset, and the evil morons are forcing this and creating revelations. So I guess they want to really murder all the beautiful people in Damascus.

You'd be surprised how easy it is to manipulate another person to kill in times of war.

I don't put anything past any human who is put in that situation.

The mind is a very fragile thing and enough propaganda and brain washing will make people do anything.

I can't bring myself to watch that stuff, so I can't help. War is not something that we should watch, or be ok with watching.

You can always screen shot though, but be mindfull of ATS policy regarding graphic content please.

Security is paramount for our citizens in that country.

Although,I wonder how this will bear with relations,with the Syrian Government,and what does it mean for the long haul.

Oh I have no issues when people want to watch live feeds from war zones, it's important to be informed and people who have th stomach for it, by all means.

I just can't stand to be that sad anymore, so I stay away from it. I can read about it, but to see it, no thank you.

I got it, but it's a macbook.

I just watched the "live" feed, and it ended and then I hit play and the same video repeated. So that wouldn't be a live feed.

Very graphic though.

Nobody saw this coming!

Can we close all the other embassies we have scattered around the globe as well? That would make a better pitch for a top story indeed.

BTW RP wouldnt want to close any embassy down... he wants U.S. military bases closed.
