It is an optical effect created by ice crystals in the atmosphere.

I have seen it several time before. It's an optical phenomenon where the moon light refracts of ice crystals in the air or something like that

It's a pretty cool thing to see, especially your first time.

Edit: dang I was beat. you guys are quick.

I believe it's just a lot of icy moisture in the air. It happens around here (Colorado) in the wintertime when the moisture suspended in the air is frozen. I don't usually see them in the summertime. Probably just some cold upper level air. I bet a resident weather geek will be on here soon to tell you for sure.

ETA: Dang! That was fast... and all the same response, no alien agenda. Awesomeness!

if you ever get to see it in the middle of a large body of water on a full moon with it high in the sky it is amazing!

Ah, nothing to worry about here iAnjo.
That's just the ring around the moon, that is.

Glad to be of assistance.

I would never live in the city, or big cities.

Its so awe inspiring to see the Northern lights almost everyday between Dec-March..

I've always notice the moon rings vary in sizes and light projection depending on where its seen and the amount of moisture in the air, much beauty up here!

ahh a Halo Moon! Isn't that cool to see! I saw it just this last week here in Colorado and then we were hit with a big snow storm! LOL Typically bad weather follows these rings for what it's worth. We got about 10" of snow here along the front range, but it's a wet and heavy snow like what we get in the spring. Talk about a hard one to dig out from, that was heavy snow! Me and my boys sat outside looking at the ring around the moon for quite a while. The whole night was sort of foggy like and add that ring around the moon.. spooky looking evening all around! LOL

"Ring around the moon, rain is coming very soon"

And it is, finally our storm doors are opening.

We need it!

Besides the Chinese New Year Parade is next Sunday. It always rains.
