Scientists want kids with three parents to help eradicate genetic disease
SYDNEY scientists want to create designer babies with the DNA of three parents to prevent children inheriting life-threatening diseases.
IVF specialists argue they could eradicate mitochondrial mutations - which can cause multi-organ failure and fatal heart, liver and muscle conditions - by removing defective genes and replacing them with healthy DNA from a donor.

The procedure, described by scientific opponents as "fraught with danger", would ensure women with the severe genetic condition do not pass it on to their children.

"This would mean we are using the genes of three parents," IVF Australia's Professor Peter Illingworth told The Sunday Telegraph.

But Professor Illingworth defended the procedure, saying it was "not properly understood" and "would not affect the child's genetic make-up".

Of course the goal is awesome. But what will it lead to ...super viruses? Super mutations? Who knows.

Doesn't really matter what we think of it since they will do it anyways.

Or, instead of stupid ideas that bypass personal responsibility, a person, male or female, could abstain from having children if they knew (which almost all do) that they have a substantial genetic defect that they risked passing on to their hypothetical children.

Think you and some others are missing the point, the 3rd parent doesnt live with the child, the idea is they donate there dna, not support the child. The dna is then used to replace the deffect dna of the couple who are wanting a baby. Its not some strange conspiracy scientists are cooking up like the thread title makes it sound.

off the top of my head:

this is where Greys come from

might "break" something and no more access to ancestral memories or instincts for that matter

replacing mitochondria?

funny how these experiments which even the nazi's didn't dare do openly,
and instead did this in secrecy in the camps and under cover of war

are now being done "in your face" but then again
the levels of ignorance and stupidity are at an all time high
and all paid for by your taxes.

sounds contradictory lol

outright lie more like it.

how is replacing one set of genes
with those of a 3rd individual not "affect[ing] the child's genetic make-up"

"F adoption; i want to pass my crappy, worthless, defective genes and pollute the gene pool while i'm at it"

[slightly OT]
this is why stupid people should not have money: they cause far much more damage than they could if they were penniless

I'd contend that most wouldn't know until their pregnant.

Not all genetic conditions are phenotypic, they can be recessive and then passed on to a child without the parents knowing until it is too late to prevent it.
