An interesting discussion came up in a debate about global warming today.

There is a 97% consensus among climate scientists that global warming is man made right? So, that means, it must be true right? We have all the data to back up this claim that mankind does cause global warming. Hold on though.

Remember, Christians, Jews and Muslims all have a consensus that God exists. You can say, that they have reached a 98% consensus as there are only 2% atheists in the world. The highly religious will place miracles and other religious experiences or coincidences and say that this is proof about God's existence but they can never be sure! There are countless philosophers and what one might call pseudo-scientific theories to "prove" that God exists. But you still have to prove it!

Atheists always yell at the religious folks or even us agnostics that God is not real why believe in something stupid just because everyone else believes in it, well how about global warming? Global Warming is the SAME exact thing. It's different than the flat earth and the gravity theories because these were proven with scientific experimentation. Man made global warming has NOT been!

So I ask Atheists why do you believe in something so stupid that everyone believes in?

Because scientists are more reliable than "Christians, Jews and Muslims" who believe in something because someone told them to, not because they have any data.

They may be more reliable. But they have yet to prove global warming is caused by man made emissions using experimentation and more experimentation to get results and the same results, or is this part of the scientific process being eroded?

Also science changes over time, so what's reliable this century may be debunked next one!

So you're suggesting that global warming is GOD made?

I'm not sure I get your point... or that scientists are made up?

If I put a pot of water on a stove, I know it will boil. That doesn't mean god exists... or that if 99% of christians believe it is god heating the water and not the element, that I am wrong?!

Confused...

You can also throw in the fact that political agendas and other financial motivators can affect "real scientific data" so you never know anything for sure.

I myself am agnostic like you because I won't rule out what I can't disprove. If there is a God I won't pretend that my human brain could really ever wrap itself around what I assume to be an extradimensional entity. Hard to do with a 3 dimensional brain.

But I like facts, figures and proof when it comes to making any judgment call but I guess when it comes down to it, you and I can't even prove the existence of protons and neutrons because we don't have our own electron microscopes. Well I don't at least.

Well, global warming is a naturally occurring event. It is likely that it is inevitable based on the our understanding of the history of the earth.

But I'm fairly certain that humans pumping greenhouse gasses into the environment in such quantities does not help this, as those emissions keep the heat trapped in.... that's not up for dispute.. that is a fact.

So... I'm guessing you're one of those "global warming is a sham!" people because you think the argument relies solely on it being created by man? When in fact it does not..

Bit like a cancer patient having a cigarette. The cancer is already there, and no one can prove it was from smoking.... It may be genetic, hereditary or from the sun. But even the cancer patient knows that smoking now does nothing to help the situation...

are you saying that because atheists don't believe in god, we shouldnt have any reason to believe man made global warming?

thats all i have to say about that

if anything...religious loons like christians and such shouldnt believe in man made global warming, because according to them...god made everything...10,000 YEARS AGO! though we have found fossils and city ruins thousands of years older than the EARTH!

Ok, where do you get the 98% consensus of religion and only 2% atheist? You only mention Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. What about Hindus? Bhuddists? Or the many other faiths? Is there a source for those numbers or did you just state them to be true?

I don't subscribe to AGW being only caused by man, but we are helping it along. Scientific data (aka hard evidence) backs that up. They have been testing the atmosphere and oceans for decades. We humas are trashing this planet like a teenage kid throwing a party when his/her parents are away.

What a humongous stretch to say they are EXACTLY the same. Religious faith and global warming. That's like saying Van Gogh cut off his own ear because he was crazy, therefore since I have ears I must believe in the devil.
