That's right people..

This little bugger can stun its prey very quickly...

It can generate a bubble that can reach the temp of the sun..

All pistol shrimp have one (Or sometimes two) oversized claw that create a cavitation bubble as it snaps shut. This bubble, very briefly reaches temperatures approaching that of the sun, about 4700 degrees Celsius. A loud "popping" noise is created as well. I've personally been shot by a randall's pistol shrimp a number of times and the pain generated is much like getting hit with a rubber band. It was a small area effect blast rather than a specific point. It should be noted that i got shot as i was handling it out of water. I don't know if it would've hurt more underwater and i'm not about to try.

I can't even imagine the energy that is required to produce a bubble that is 4700 degrees! That just doesn't seem possible.

I wonder how many scientists in the military-industrial complex are studying this.

Nope. "As I hold up both hands missing 3 fingers!!!" Just kidding, I have heard they can do some serious damage like a bone deep laceration and such. Either way it keeps the kids out of the tank. Seriously though I have had him for over a year now and my hands are always in the tank and I have never had a problem. They are fascinating to watch though and drive you nuts with the clicking sometimes.

Pistol shrimp also use goby fish as watchdogs. In return the goby gets a nice snug burrow and a roommate.

These critters better never end up in the waters near a gun-hating, Constitution-ignoring state like New York or California!! They would immediately be scooped up and jailed for having this naturally built-in pistol.

Seriously. Stay away from NY or Cali or its JAIL for you little critters...

How would it cause cavitation if it's out of water?

Amazing how something so....underdeveloped has the ability to make something that we cant even come close to. Maybe they'll study its form and use that to try to create an artificial sun. It'd be interesting. I wonder what makes the temperature rise so quickly

I wonder if this can be implemented into a real world sonic gun. How does this work above water?
