Thanks to Ken Lewenza, the President of the Canadian Auto-Workers, over 460 families are thrown out onto the scrapheap.

His trade union's obstinacy has forced Caterpiller to shut down a manufacturing plant in Canada, throwing 460 workers out onto the street without a job.

Bit more info would be nice for those of us not living in the actual area.

here is a snip I found:

The closing infuriated Mr. Lewenza, whose union represents the plant’s workers. Caterpillar had demanded pay cuts of 50 per cent in many job categories, elimination of a defined-benefit pension plan, reductions in dental and other benefits and the end of a cost-of-living adjustment.

I would say the tariff plan would make caterpillar rethink the whole leaving plan.

the entire west either must all become china, and work for peanuts, or..we must stand together and slap crippling tariffs on companies deciding to use foreign workforce for production. pretty simple really.

This is not a cut and dry issue as the ops presented it...read about it yourself here:

Caterpiller are NOT moving production to China, they are moving it to Indiana as the folks there are not lazy union bums.

Oh, and wanted to also point this out to the Americans:

he company said the work is moving to other operations in North and South America.

Union officials and other observers expect a new Progress Rail plant in Muncie, Ind., to be the beneficiary. The closing was announced 36 hours after Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels signed so-called right-to-work legislation, which makes it more difficult for unions to organize.

Congratulations to all the republicans whom are tirelessly pushing for right to work states and end of unions. We are now mexico. Next up...federal minimum wage so we can bring the jobs back home...at 30 cents an hour.

The Union was FIGHTING on behalf of the workers who would have had their pay [color=gold]CUT IN HALF by those SCUMBAG CORPORATE THIEVES who never can get enough of the BONUSES and PAY INCREASES for themselves as usual.

Blame the scumbag corrupt, greedy Corporation. They were probably hoping for this to happen anyways.

Unions represent the PEOPLE, corporations represent [color=gold]GREEDY CORRUPT SNAKES who would pay people a buck a week and make you work 20 hours a DAY if they could get away with it. SOMEONE has to fight these BASTARDS on behalf of the WORKERS!!!!!

The Union may have lost THIS one, but have WON in many other situations in the past on behalf of the WORKER whom [color=gold]corporations SPIT on and SCREW over every chance they get!!!

This is a long time coming.. the Canadian rail plant was making literally over twice as much as the plant in Indiana that was producing rail equipment as well. Caterpillar told the union to fall in line with the rest of the North American work force or lose their jobs.

So now they are moving to Indiana. Sometimes unions are good. Sometimes they are bad. In this case the Union royally screwed over the workers through their ignorance.
