That's why I said "the closest unique bid". It would work exactly the same, except no one would be inclined to bid a certain amount based upon where they think the answer may be, it would be more random.

Ah yes, now I'm with you . Perhaps there are legal reasons why they couldn't do it that way, it may fall under gambling laws using that system and as selling to the lowest unique bid for many other things has already been established, there may be legislation already in place for it that the auctioneer has followed, I have no idea . But yes, it would work that way too and indeed make it more random.
