Should dyslexics be banned from becoming professors, doctors? I am thinking that their learning style with it's concentrations on certain areas and lack of ability in others, may change subjects artificially. Would engineering be as it is today or better if dyslexics were not in it as academics? I remember hearing of an academic with a severe learning disability and a greatly reduced vocabulary: that people with mental health problems should not be allowed to do engineering. The idiocy of this escaped him as mental health is what it says where as learning disability is what it says it is. Maybe engineering would have a larger range of skills if people like him were not in it. Then several years down the road they will find they are short of a business studies lecturer and suddenly our IDIOT SAVANT is teaching business.

I DON'T KNOW, BUT ALL CAPS SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED HERE.

The answer is that pretty much all places shouldn't not hire someone because of their disabilities or color. Unless they are paralyzed from the neck down, then I suppose so....

Carry on...

a disability should limit their job attaining potential in areas where their disability would hamper their job..pretty simple
I dont want someone with involuntary twitching to do surgery on me, I don't think a dyslexic should be editing books, etc...pretty common sense stuff. Otherwise, if they can do a job, then they can do the job.

logic 101.

Hmmm...everyone I know now has a diagnosis...everyone.

Some are professionals and some are not.

I'm an aircraft mechanic and certain kinds of learning disabilities would be detrimental in maintaining a structurally sound aircraft.

I don't know your background but engineering is hard. I doubt someone with a learning disability would be able to understand or remember all the math involved. I have a hard enough time and I'm not learning disabled. It's sort of like, "should children be allowed to be astronauts?" Well, they can go into space, but they are just going to float around and cry.

If a person overcomes their disability then they will just be another weird engineer. More power to 'em.

Edit: and think about it. Would you want to drive to work everyday over a bridge built by someone with a "learning disability"?

Well they shouldn't in short...but I can see why it would be important...for example:

A doctor reading a chart that reads "upper RT." might confuse "upper right"...transposed as TR..."torso region"...could be an ugly surgery for the patient that went in a minor surgery!

Other than that...no reason I can think of!

I do think it is best there be a cap on the % at times. You should not have too many dyslexics in any organisation: as it is statement that linguistic communication is lacking. There should always be people capable of communicating in good written form. In universities you: if employing dyslexics academics: create degrees biased towards learning disabled. I cannot imagine this being tolerated with the mentally unwell: insane. I suppose it depends upon numbers and once enough numbers are in, you can then influence everything else. I have nothing aagainst people with any disability but an environment of idiot savantry should not be fostered as it is unblanced unless the disabilities in the group balance each other out.Actually dyslexics have biased intelligence they lose somewhere but gain somewhere else. However a biased environment will make it harder than it should. A neutral environment should be fostered so engineering or maths should be equally hard for people with concentrated intelligence and for others with normal itelligence distribution( not iq in some ares higher than othersareas as in dyslexia, dyscalculus etc..).

I hate that term ... "learning disabled"

everybody learns in their own way at their own pace.

everybody has a niche, a place, and a reason for being.

What exactly do you have against people with dyslexia?
My husband is mildly dyslexic,he has been working with
computers since they were still made with vacuumn tubes.
He is 75 years old and is still working as an IT specialist.

I forgot to mention...he also teaches classes sometimes too!
He is studying his material for his next class now,it starts soon.

It does seem that environments have been created for dyslexics separate from other groups.A degree should not be created to be easier for some people than others: dyslexic academics create degrees they could do: subjects change and maybe in the future a degree they could not do would be appropriate. I simply abhor the creation of ghettos for dyslexics. Is there really a programmer out there who can read literature? An unbalanced group is counterproductive. I simply wish to hold back the rise of the idiot savant. It's like in some areas being able to read is ignored. Is everyone else around these people supposed to ignore there literary skills. As for him teaching courses: he would not feel happy teaching a course he could not pass. Subjects have their own life ad=d should not develop around the disabilities of a few key people.

There is a great deal of assuming and speculation on this thread, with no knowledge of the level and degree of any particular person's supposed disability.

If a person can pass the classes, and get certified or licensed in their particular field of choice, then what is the problem? There are many levels of dyslexia, and a severe dyslexic probably wouldn't go into a field in which he or she couldn't perform simple calculations without crossing up the the numbers.

I have met a lot of stupid doctors and nurses, yet they still practice. I think any judgment should be done on a case by case basis.

No, you can has no cheezeburger.

Of course some should be restricted. Especially when cognitive and life-and-death decisions sometimes require spontaneous action. Heavy machinery...Emergency responses...etc.

I have had an epiphany, It seems to me that some learning disabilities dyslexia.. are treated differently than mental health problems. I think most people would assume that someone with a learning disability that is severe would be more employable than someone with a severe mental health problem. It seems to me that it's partly a matter of publicity. What people end up doing is partly a result of what society and themselves expect to do. A team of people all the same will not work as well as a team that have different qualities. All of any one thing is bad for a team or a subject.
