I have been out of the loop for a long while. The last time I upgraded my play list was about 10 years ago. I dont know the names of any modern rock/metal bands. If you could recommend me some good bands I would greatly appreciate it. I am a musician and like complex music so please dont post tasteless main stream in it for the money bands.

if youre into REAL metal then i suggest the following:

fleshgod apocalypse

nokturnal mortum

wolves in the throne room

benighted

cannabis corpse

die apokalyptian reiters

taake

1349

bal-sagoth

abadden

amon amarth

...and oceans

arch enemy

behemoth

chthonic

i can list so many more....but ive got like 60 + gigs of music so...it would take a while xD

and as by your request, i did not suggest any mainstream "for the money" bands. i hate that crap and its not real music. everything i suggested has complex rhythms and the musicians from each of these bands know how to make music

Go here→Maynard James Keenan - A Dedication

Several different bands, and spanning a couple decades, but all containing MJK.

This ↑ 1, definitely! Don't even think. Just go.

But these↓ are worth a listen also.

or here: ohGr
or here: gODHEAD

In terms of hardcore, check out the following:

Converge (great band overall)
Defeater (progressive hardcore, very powerful, easy to get into)
Coalesce (a lot of math)
108 (krishna-core, great guitar riffs)
Botch/Narrows

----------
Kvelartak (amazing riffs and energy)
Breather Resist
Swans
Neurosis
Yob (definitely check them out)
Eyehategod
Column of Heaven
I think someone already listed Dillinger Escape Plan
Weekend Nachos (very heavy powerviolence)
Assück
Animals as Leaders

Lamb Of God
DevilDriver
Superjoint Ritual
Down
Hellyeah
Static-X
The Cavalera Conspiracy

Just a few names I can think of.

10 years? Lots of good stuff in the last 10 years. I'm surprised, pleasantly so. I can only give you what I like, many variations of Rock:

That's bare bones. Most of those bands have many more tunes.

I listen to a lot of the bands listed so far. I am a guitarist and appreciate technical metal (don't care for metalcore much), the following are some of my favorites to play along with.

- Trivium
- God Forbid [specifically the songs "Antihero" "To the Fallen Hero" "End of the World"]
- Killswitch Engage
- The Showdown (got a cool southern US sound)
- All That Remains
-- my personal favorite = As I lay Dying [the album 'An Ocean Between Us' is amazing, and their newest has some gems as well]

Hope some are new discoveries for some people, enjoy.

You have not missed much.

Good metal died when the recording industry decided to adopt the business model of taking their customers to court.

I have not bought a CD since the late 90's.

Treat your customers like crap, and they will go away.

Dig out your old CD's.......Judas Priest, Nazareth, Ozzy, Poison, Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister, beyond that the Lawyers of the music industry can rot.
