The Japanese people aren't too concerned with that nowadays...they've had rallies and protests in the beginning, but not so anymore. Most of the people have realized there really isn't much that they can do about the situation now, so they are more focused on rebuilding the northeast. It's snowing like crazy up there now, and people are just trying not to freeze to death...can't be thinking about the radiation on top of that.
This is definitely an important topic and something that needs to be followed up openly in the media and by the government, but they are too busy reporting about if the current prime minister is going to quit or not. I'm not sure if it's all a diabolic scheme to get the people's minds off of the radiation from Fukushima, but I guarantee a lot of people have forgotten about it, it's not a topic of discussion anymore.

It's a sad reality, but that's how it is...

All may not be lost. There is one technique that I know of, and it involves building a turret Cloud-buster.

Cloud-busters are some really good things but they are dangerous, more dangerous than Nuclear materials. And for that reason it can make radioactive materials loose their charge and turn them into a harmless lump of metal.

This is a cheap solution and Japan can do it in a matter of days, putting turret cloud-busters along the coast of the accident and point them towards the accident and towards the reaction, a.k.a. the Pacific.

The most of you should inform theirselves about nuclear power a bit better.

I am not an employee of a nuclear company nor get I paid by a company. I am just a regular student studying Automotive. I am going to Japan in a few weeks for half a year.

I am not concerned!

And let me tell you why.

The radiation messured 20km away from the reactor, is only as high as detected in Munich! Is there somebody afraid of travelling to Munich?

We have background radion, and in the most parts of Europe this background radiation is higher then 30km away from Fukushima. How come? Because of Tschernobyl and nuclear bomb tests.

Is there anybody leaving Europe? No.

It is true, that the meltdown is definetely a big problem. (Only occured, because this type of reactor had no containment). But it is a fact, that the radiation is not as high as you want it to be.

Lots of experts can tell you the radiation which is currently detected there. If you don't trust Tepco, you can at leat trust independent messurements.
Of course you should not stay directly in the area surrounding the reactor, but 30km away is safe.

Btw. did you know, that we in Germany sell drinking water for babies, which would not get through the quality checks in Japan, because of its radiation? Japan has one of the strictest controlling systems concerning food.

The meltdown could have been stopped, but now it is too late. And even if there will be another earthquake (there were lots of quakes in the last year), nothing will happen there as long as not tsunami will occur.

So far....

Btw. before I forget, this is a nice site about current radiation in several areas of Japan (I am not sure how accurate though)

This is one of the biggest Bullsnip posts I've ever read here on ATS.....

I'm pretty sure your link is funded by tepco. No way in he'll is fukashimas background radiation close to zero.

No offense poster, but you haven't received any stars for a reason......

Ignorant.

He's talking about Orgonite devices that are supposed to be able to manipulate subtle energies which in turn have an effect on various things in the environment.

Haven't delved into this too much myself, so I don't know much more about it than what is at the wiki.
The topic is generally trollbait, so don't hold out too much hope for a sensible discussion if the subject is pursued...

It's not an under read topic, simply due to lack of responses. I read this topic and these posts every time there's a new one, but I read to find out what's happening, not to reply.

I'm sorely lacking on any information to share on this topic, but it doesn't mean I'm not interested.

I doubt the low number of replies indicates a low interest rate.

I don't know what to say, beyond expressing enormous sympathy for the innocents caught up in this horror, and intense worry about the ongoing consequences. Plus, of course, rage at those who are trying to keep things under wraps.

But when Americans start dying in droves and the West is uninhabitable, ATSers will find a way to blame it on Obama, "liberals" and "socialists", I am sure of that.

Well, DUH. It's always Obamas' fault. It's always the Progressive Liberals' fault!!!

Remember what Obama said... "I won", He's taking responsibility for it. Deal with it.

I guess all the hate and anger has worn down the people who give a damn. Its a situation that cant be fixed and as usual the perps have moved on .

Basically it's like this.

You voted G.W. Bush into office, not merely the father, but the son as well ... and then you voted for Obama into office,

What the f#¤%#%"!¤ do you want us to do? Knock some sense into your head? You have to start at page 1, and this isn't page 1, it's like chapter 10 in the story. These are the consequences, and all you have is a lot of puppy dogs playing soldier around the world, and a lot of pee pees yielling "no nuclear power". Both of which is, the wrong step to go ... because, you'd be even worse off, when people are freezing to death, because of lack of energy, food, supplies as a consequence of that.

If you want change, I suggest you start by voting for something else than Bush, Cheney and Obama into office ... that would be a start. We need people with intelligence, not goons ... we need people who work on having better inventions, and better distribution networks and not people who work on spending everything on endless wars, and using their dirty hands to man-handle babies at airports. We don't need these goons, to look after us like we're their children and as if they're some Gods in heaven ... we need to be able to use abilities, to make inventions and improve our lives and be able to take care of situations like these.

But, unfortunately people like you voted for wars, and more wars ... and now there is no money. Nobody can do a job, because we're all being "surveillanced" by a pack of lunatics, who think they're looking after us. And we have no opportunity, nor money to take care of these unforeseen events. The only thing we can do ... IS TO BURY IT AS DEEP AS WE CAN, AND HOPE FOR THE BEST AND PREVENT THE ABSOLUTE WORSE.

So, bang your own head for your own stupidity if this goes highwire.

I can only hope all is not true with this story.... i really would like for the Media to come out and tell us exactly what is happening regarding Fukishima! It's been a hell of a long time since i heard anything on the News about it or read anything on line about it that i had forgotten all about it.... i guess this is exactly what they want if the story in the OP is true!!

I also guess that by taking a trip out to Japan and seeing for ourselves could be the only way to find out the truth.

661386786600000 people dead like a hundred times the actual people living now on earth....

LET THE FUN BEGIN, why people just dismiss this kind of tragedy? Ignorance is Bliss...

Because they don't buy your straw man.

300 tons of plutonium was not released into the ocean. 300 tons of nuclear waste was (supposedly - according to a dubious source) released into the ocean.

This does not give an estimate for volume of water, but it does seem to be pretty highly concentrated waste water:

Water, water, everywhere: In April, the Fukushima Daiichi plant sent 68 million becquerels per cubic meter of radioactive materials into the Pacific, making it the largest accidental release in history.

But then we have this bit here:

This latest analysis, reported in the 1 December 2011 issue of the journal Environmental Science & Technology, indicates that the concentration in ocean water poses no direct threat to humans or marine life. However, accumulation in marine sediment could be of concern for decades, says Ken Buesseler, a marine chemist at Woods Hole who was involved in the research.

Fukushima’s Impact on the Ocean Analyzed

Accumulation in sediments, within the food chain through bioaccumulation , and in waste water treatment plants through industrialaccumulation, there are many paths contamination can take to enter the environment.

In the new paper, the researchers show that in the presence of alkali metal ions such as sodium — for example, in seawater — these clusters are stable enough to persist in solution or as small particles even when the oxidizing agent is removed.

In other words, these clusters could form on the surface of a fuel rod exposed to seawater and then be transported away, surviving in the environment for months or years before reverting to more common forms of uranium, without peroxide,  and settling to the bottom of the ocean. There is no data yet on how fast these uranium peroxide clusters will break down in the environment, Navrotsky said.
