Imagine if the format of ATS was applied to the governance of our country on the local, state and planet level? That rather than trusting men, which Thomas Jefferson called a fatal mistake, our elected representatives were merely the individuals who carried out our wishes in person?

For the sake of this discussion, let's take for granted all of the noble, Natural or Divine (your choice) human traits and capacity for discernment referred to by the Founding Fathers is a fact.

Starting on the neighborhood block level, a Block Representative would be elected to take a census of the certified citizens on his block to ascribe official log-ins. While he was at it, he could get to know his neighbors and their abilities in the event of a natural disaster. By knowing other Block Representatives, vote results could always be confirmed on a local level.

Once citizens were registered, all would be reminded and taught in school of the civic duty to participate on the forum as time allowed. At that point all business conducted by the local, state and federal politicians would be conducted absolutely transparently. All new business, budgets, proposed legislation, etc would be posted and open to the community. No official votes could be made prior to some set amount of time was given for citizens' input and non-binding online voting.

As an analogy, think of the relatively new process of connecting networked PCs into a grid to create a supercomputer. Just the unutilized processing power of a couple thousand computers is equivalent to the speed and ability of the most accurate supercomputers.

Imagine a series of cumulative stars and flags to highlight important parts of proposed legislation driving debates all over the country. Think of all the amazing ideas, experience and knowledge now going to waste. Think of the enormous responsibility we now place into the hands of a very few people today. Even at the local level, a very small city has a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars. How can any small group of people NOT be tempted to conspire at some level?

I can't imagine that if the 800 page NDAA bill were broken down into small sections and sent to citizens based on their preselected interests and experience, ATS would have been able in a couple days to distill it into its most salient and troubling parts. It never would have seen the light of day had its authors known it was going to be reviewed in such detail prior to a vote. people will naturally become more active during issues effecting them

The question is "Are we mature enough as a civilization to embrace the notion all men are created equal?" Or have we become so brainwashed and fractured that we believe we are neither capable nor deserving?

Am I crazy? I really think this will work. I think we don't have much time to wait and find out. A highschool kid actually did a neighborhood census where I live last summer as part of a hurricane readiness program. I met a lot of people I would not have known otherwise. It gave me an opening to meet people under good intentions and mutual aid.

This can start as a highschool civics project and become the great cleansing.

Dear zarp3333,

Starting on the neighborhood block level, a Block Representative would be elected to take a census of the certified citizens on his block to ascribe official log-ins. While he was at it, he could get to know his neighbors and their abilities in the event of a natural disaster. By knowing other Block Representatives, vote results could always be confirmed on a local level.

While I think your intent is great, I would find such a process to be too invasive. I like my privacy and my neighbor doesn't need to know everything I think. I am also troubled by the idea of being a certified citizen. By the way, many totalitarian nations have done things similar to what you are recommending with block captains. Not saying that is your intent; but, that is how things get used. As for the networking aspect, I understand the concept behind crowd-sourcing and I believe it has failings because nobody gets the whole picture.

Direct democracy sounds very attractive on many levels; but, I think what you would find in it's application would be vague laws and that it actually puts more power in the hands of unelected officials as it is left for them to define the application of the law. If we want good government, we need to vote for people based on character rather than our pocketbooks or single issues, in my opinion.

Having said all that I did, I think we are headed towards direct democracy. I think the youth of today will demand it and I think they will vote to be even more restrictive of rights because they do not believe in privacy as was explained by the creator of Facebook. I look at what people post on Facebook and MySpace and am shocked, people have even been caught posting videos of crimes they committed. Perhaps it would work if we limited direct democracy to a veto power. Just my thoughts. Peace.

Dear zarp3333,

I am shocked that there are not any other responses, you brought up some good points and I would have thought that you would have been flooded with support for your ideas. While I do not agree with you in total, certainly there is a place for internet discussion and voting even if the votes were merely to inform our elected official of how the populace feels. Peace.

Sorry to say but I think you're a dumbass. The Russians said the same thing as Stalin lead them to the concentration camps.

The excuse of privacy is used to thwart freedom by dictators. Each citizen has a duty to their neighbors to stand up and be counted by their friends so they know who the enemy is. If you aren't willing to do that then you have been brainwashed and it's too late.

Don't bother writing me from prison. I won't send you and cigarettes, magazines or anal lube to ease your pain. You get what you deserve.

Dear zarp3333.

You asked a question, I thought honestly, I gave an answer that was hones, you responded by being offensive. I guess you didn't want a real discussion and that is after I was supportive of your questions. Your thread says who you are, it says nothing about me. Have a good life.

You are right. I apologize. I am so worked up I found myself waking up at 2:00am frustrated and angry. I lost my manners.
