The carrier group based in Norfolk, VA will also include a guided missile cruiser and three guided missile destroyers, reports Interfax. USS Abraham Lincoln had already entered the Persian Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz on Jan 22.

She is escorted by a guided missile cruiser and two destroyers (USN), one British and one French warships. Meanwhile, another US Navy’s carrier strike carrier group headed by USS Carl Vinson is stationed eastward the Strait of Hormuz, in northern part of the Arabian Sea washing southwest coast of Iran.

At present, the US has 15,000-men force deployed in Kuwait, expeditionary marine battalion, and amphibious landing group.

This very well may just be a military posturing to make Iran comply to the sanctions are cease their Nuclear Programme, but when you look at THIS much movement and the logistics and expense of moving this many troops/hardware a half-a-world away... All signs point to war.

When Israel strikes and Iran retaliates and hits American bases in the region, last thing the U.S wants to do is spend weeks sending ships to the region. I

Considering the source, this sounds like TPTB are signalling Tehran that the ball is now back in their court. But, if anything we are talking about a scenario weeks away. At least as long as it takes for this deployment to reach the theater of operation.

One could argue that having carrier groups in the region is more a projection of force than positioning for war. Time and time again, since the late 80s the first bombs have been dropped by stealth airplanes.(Although, yes, Apache Helicopters took out the forward radar stations in the first Iraq war) B2s flying from Missouri would drop the first bombs, though submarine launched cruise missiles will also be timed to arrive at the same moment. Sorties from the carriers would only come later in the day.
If provoked, the Navy will likely react, but as for now, I firmly believe this is a simple show of force, which is after all the most important mission of the US Navy.

makes more sense for them to wait until spring, since obviously the heating oil needs of the US and EU are very high at the moment and we all know what oil prices going through the roof would do to our economy's in our current condition.

Me too.
The usual MO is about 100 Cruise Missles, then let dust settle, to ascess damage.

The actual article is rather short on specifics and doesn't even mention the carrier. It could be the Enterprise, which is now conducting COMPUTEX in the West Atlantic. That's the "Composite Unit Training Exercise" that is normally done before a deployment. The Bush has also set sail, but since it just returned from a long deployment in December, it's unlikely they would undergo another long one so soon.

Indeed, we have two Carrier Strike Groups in the area, the Lincoln and the Vinson, but that's rather old news. There are two carriers in that region 3/4 of the time and have been for years. The arricle also mentions, almost breathlessly, that a couple of destroyers and a cruiser will accompany the carrier.

Of course. They always do. That's what a Carrier Strike Group is.

Yes, but in order to attack you need to take out any counter-measures, and that's when stealth comes into play. They take down all the AA's before sending anything.

I think it's a matter of semantics. Stealth attacks are the first ones, but the "real" attack comes after.
