Megaupload Users Plan To Sue FBI Over Lost Files

www.mtv.com

The drama surrounding file-sharing site Megaupload continued Friday (January 27) as users announced a plan to sue the FBI over files lost during the site's shutdown last week.

Last week, the federal government took action against Megaupload.com, arresting several members of the company on racketeering and copyright-infringement charges. A federal indictment alleged that the site, which allows users to transfer large files, has generated more than $175 million in criminal proceeds and costs copyright-holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated movies, albums and other materi

hahah

didn't see this posted.
(i searched, if already posted please delete)

with all the controversy lately surrounding PIPA, SOPA, ACTA and other bills.

recently megaupload got shut down.

well apparently users are getting together and are planning to sue the FBI.

don't know if it will do any good but i applaud their efforts.

quote from Torrentfreak wich sums it up pretty nicely:
'The widespread damage caused by the sudden closure of Megaupload is unjustified and completely disproportionate to the aim intended," they announced in a statement obtained by TorrentFreak.'

thoughts?

There were many legitimate paying subscribers that had uploaded their own files for backup purposes.

I would be ticked off also......

There was a lot of home brew stored on there also.

The thing that really irks me the most is...

How in the hell America has a right to seize anything outside of its boarders...

Yeah, somehow, I don't see the users winning against the FBI. But, okay. I applaud their efforts as well.

Oh yeah? and guess The Department of Justice copyright doesn't hurt the artists they either have adapt or leave the industry.

I hope Megaupload will be back though.

And as for the The Department of Justice should they be arresting real criminals on our streets?

International / UN / multi lateral copyright / intellectual property agreements between countries.

its Title 17 of US Code - Copyright protection and infringment.
17 USC 506 - A - Criminal Infringment

and

Title 18 of US Code - Criminal Copyright Infringement by meeting 506 A of title 17 above.
18 USC 2319 - Criminal infringement of a copyright

and

18 USC 371 - Conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud United States

The key is going to be the money made from member dues / donations / ad revenue etc. Its all considered as personally profiting by allowing access to pirated material.

The conspiracy to defraud the United States Government because the copyrights / patents / etc are issued through the US government and because its an international issue, so instead of person to nation its nation to nation is a possibility as well.

Here is the RICO Statute -
CHAPTER 96—RACKETEER INFLUENCED AND CORRUPT ORGANIZATIONS

Domestic charges can go international because of these -
List of parties to international copyright / patent treaties

List of parties to international related rights treaties

List of parties to international patent treaties

Im not taking a side btw, just answering the how question. Hope this helps some.

you forgot to add the legid=slation that just passed inmy country where we as citizens are NOT allowed to know what was passed. this included copywrite patent and intelectual property laws THAT WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO KNOW ABOUT FOR FOUR YEARS.

how is that for justice?
how is it that in a civil society controlled by laws we are not even allowed to READ these laws that govern us?

i am from NZ where KIM dot com was arrested,
the govenment here just before the last general election passed legislation without consideration by the public,
the topics it covered was copyright, patent and IP property legislation,
we as the public of a civil society are not allowed to read these laws for a further 4 years from passage of legislation.

there are no links as this was BLACKEDOUT in our media.
this legislation was used on kim dot com and in his extradition case infront of our courts.

what you seem to think of as a perfectly legal way of enforcing copyright laws written in the USA
violate our democracy and makes a farce out of laws.

WHY CANT WE READ THEM FOR FOUR YEARS?

This is such total BS.

Eh FBI, where are the charges against Jon Corzine for stealing $3 BILLION FROM HIS CUSTOMERS???

Where are the charges against the bankers who committed TENS OF THOUSANDS OF FELONIES with foreclosure fraud??

Where are the charges against these PEDOPHILES WORKING AT THE PENTAGON??
Pentagon declined to investigate hundreds of purchases of child pornography

Yeah, let's get Megaupload instead!

This whole business really shows for WHO the FBI REALLY WORKS FOR.

Well for starters im not familiar with New Zealand law since im a US citizen.
Secondly I as under the impression that New Zealand had an open records law / freedom of information request.

The US is enforcing US copyright / patents that were issued to US entities, and as such when the crime crosses a border it does become the business of the US government. It would be the same for your government if NZ copyright / patent infringements occurred by entities in the US.

Third, the US is not enforcing US law on a foreign entity. The US IS enforcing those laws by using the existing international agreements that protect copyright / patents, which your nation is a signatory to. So you are more than welcome to take your complaints to the appropriate forum and lay the blame where it belongs - you and your government.

Quit blaming the US for your governments actions.

The Department of Justice, which did NOT do the investigations for the Pentagon, as that is a DoD / DCIS and Jag Corp issue.

Yeah 3 months, still not in jail. Yet, they go after megaupload, within a day everyone is in jail. Please.

The FBI works for big business. Simple as that.

If they didn't, that POS attorney general would be behind bars for operation gun walker, not to mention what happened at WACO and at the Oklahoma FBI bombing.

If they want to take down websites, they should go after child porn websites and whoever is running them and proving the material for them. Just that task alone would take all their time. But no, that doesn't make money to the government... I mean, it's just kids being abused... no biggie right?

The FBI are not doing their job at all. They are corrupt thugs of a corrupt government.

we already are close friends with the us,
we co operate on many levels with your govenment,
we have sent our eleite troops to places of conflict in assitence of your govenment,
you are like a big brother to us,

why do you think i dislike the us?

we are law abiding citizens who wish to follow the laws in a civil society,
why are we blocked from viewing the changes in legislation so that we may comply with the law,

i want to be able to comply with current legislation but may not do so and may fall foul of FBI simply because WE CANT READ THE NEW LAWS,

how is this fair on a civil society?

Then feel free to contact the US government and turn over the damning information you have that will put him behind bars. I mean you seem to have all the info since you know for sure they are corrupt right?

And they do... Child porn is also a state matter, which is something you still dont seem to grasp - differences in jurisdiction between FEderal and State. If you ever get off your I hate the US all the time rants you might learn something.

Its not, however its not the fault of the US government, but your own New Zealand government. Take the complaint to them.
