After reading this on Wikipedia, I thought I would take a closer look at this video:

From Wikipedia:
"In the episode John states that in the late 1980's, he and Bob drove onto an area of Groom Lake (he indicates with a satellite image that the area in question is deep within Area 51 territory, just below and to the left of the Groom Lake dry lake bed,) in an RV to watch "flying saucer" test flights. If this story is true, then Bob must have worked or been connected to Area 51 in some fashion, or he would not have been allowed to go, much less drive into, the areas talked about and shown by John Lear on the program."

I am trying to analyze video of this show, particularly the section with Lear showing photo(s). If you don't look at it frame by frame, or you aren't paying attention, one would think it is one photo - but it appears to be 3 different photos.

"That little spot there..." frame 588 he is holding Photo #1, a GE image showing Groom Lake, Papoose Lake, and Lear is pointing his finger at supposed S-4 site. See below:

Frame 687 he says "was, ah, where we parked the motorhome" and is pointing at what looks to me like the GLR border point on Photo #2. See below:

The next frame, like frame 688, he is pulling his finger away from a different photo, Photo #1 again, and is clearly pointing at where Lazar claims(ed) S-4 is, clearly a GE image. See pic below, after going frame by frame, I have indicated what I believe are the markups he has on this picture:

"We were approximately in this position" - he is holding what appears to be Photo #3 at around frame 905. I have not been able to determine where he is indicating, I cannot locate it in GE.

Not sure what to make of this. Some weird editing, not sure why they kept changing up the photo's.
1) Clearly he is pointing at the supposed location of S-4 at Papoose Lake.
2) Then he points to what I think is the GLR border point as to where they parked the motorhome, but next frame he is pulling his finger away from "S-4".
3) Finally he says "we were approximately at this position" when he set up the Celetron to take the video of the "craft".

Perhaps someone with a better copy of the video, or better eyes than my old ones, can determine where he is pointing on Photo #3?

I am searching for a better/HD copy.
EDITED TO ADD:
Found a 720p version, dl'ing now. Will see it that helps me answer my questions.

Great episode, I don't know how i missed this when it originally aired as i usually watch the show.

the one thing that stands out, is during the confrontation at the area 51 security perimeter... the trio escapes, but how on earth, with all of those huge "no photography" signs, did the camera man, who was not in the car, get those shots and not at least get his footage confiscated (if not imprisoned!)?

Why do you spend time researching something that you think is complete nonsense? I leave things I think are nonsense alone and look into things I think will bear fruit.

You could email Mr Lear and ask him what he's pointing at. That would be a lot easier.

not sure what to make of Bob Lear.

he has a lot of good stories , could also be a disinfo agent.

Your thread title needs to be corrected. The Decoded show is interviewing JOHN Lear. He's friends with Bob Lazar who supposedly worked at Area 51.

I liked the show and was surprised at the conclusions they made. Usually the 3 investigators try to debunk everything they look at. This time, they seemed to have a much more open mind about this topic.

Looked at the HD version of this program:
I was wrong, it IS the same photo, not three different ones.

"That little spot there..."
The magical site of S-4, without a road or trail of any kind in sight, magic hangar doors that over many years still look exactly like the surrounding desert:
37° 6'53.80"N, 115°50'18.58"W

You can clearly see the markups on his picture now.
Not sure why he has STOP marked about 5 miles down GLR - it's a long way from the border:

"Was, ah, where we parked the motorhome"
He has he finger on the spot marked "John, Bob Gene"

"We were approximately in this position"
I am pretty certain it is the same photo, and he is pointing at the same spot where he says they parked the motorhome:

I am fairly certain he is pointing at the spot called Campfire Hill, at 37°21'5.77"N, 115°36'24.41"W
It is the last reasonable spot to park something like a motorhome before the border. There is a nice hill there too, good view. Not of the base, unfortunately.

What "confrontation"? The camo dudes did exactly what they ALWAYS do, I have seen it personally:
1) Park on the hill whenever unknown traffic approaches the border
2) Bring in truck #2 if it is more than the usual tourist approach i.e. people stopping, getting out, then climbing the hill at the border with an obvious cameraman in tow. Or when some dumbass Canadian shows up at the border with his dirtbike
3) Start driving down the hill in an effort to scare off pesky camera crew and pseudo-investigators
4) In the case of the dirtbiker, follow him around for the next hour or so, then almost back to the highway

The No Photography sign is for within the base, to my knowledge. I have had people try to tell me that it also includes photographing any base marked as such from the exterior, even if you are on public land. I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble for doing this though, I guess it depends on the circumstances. That being the case, why wouldn't they arrest every person who climbs Tikaboo Peak with a camera? You can see the base from there, albeit pretty crappy with the best viewing conditions.

Jeezus, that was a dopey mistake. And since 4 hours has elapsed, I cannot correct it. "Bob Lear"? Duh... I must be lazarded...

Now this is a better examination than just repeating like a parrot what something is not. The problem is you don't know what's in Lear's head, he may have lied a little bit and all becomes unclear why he pointed there not here, etc. But good try nonetheless

It was interesting when the police escort flew by them with covered cargo. They didn't recognize it at the time but no doubt there was an aircraft being transported to Area 51. The A-12 made a similar trip from Palmdale, Ca.

Good try at what? I was trying to find out if what I quoted above that was posted on Wikipedia about Lazar is factual. It isn't, and that segment about Lazar has been removed from Wikipedia. The Lazar legend lives on, just without that little bit of misinfo being taken as fact.

Lear pointed where I expected him to, outside the Area 51 boundary.

Irrelevant. You don't need to see the base if you are watching for things in the sky like non-conventional craft. That is so obvious even the real slow members will realise that.

There's no smoke without fire members and this type of statement is pure smoke - deliberate OR not.

You don't need to see the base to see CONVENTIONAL craft in the sky either. What's your point? I never implied that because they couldn't see the base, they couldn't see what was in the sky above it. Conclusion-jump-much?

FURTHERMORE - I started this thread, specifically about what was said on a particular program VS what was posted on Wikipedia. Take your beef with gariac to another thread. Personally I agree with him on most subjects, but that isn't the subject here.

My point is why did you say, "Not of the base, Unfortunately"? You don't have to get upset. It looks like more smoke aimed to distract from the the truth but you could just explain why you said it if you have a reasonable explanation.

Sometimes I do jump to conclusions. I am human.

It's good to see you admit that they could clearly see what was in the skies above the base though. It's a start. When they were there in relation to others who arrived years later is significant too.

What was said on the particular program by JOHN Lear was that they went to see a flying saucer fly from the position you were discussing and they saw it over the mountains NOT at the base. How can that not be relevant to exactly what you were discussing? You want to draw attention from what John was saying do you? Well don't discuss it then!

I have taken my beef with Gariac elsewhere. That does not mean you have a right to stop me posting ON TOPIC comments and information for the benefit of the many members who can clearly see I am onto something.

It is obvious a few people in the thread (crazy Canadian excluded) have never been to the area. You should study a topo map, but let me describe it.

As you head down GLR, you lose elevation. There are some hills near the border that block your view. When the dust settles, if your intent is to view the airspace, you are better off parking by the ET highway. A trivial scientific way to prove this is to park a scanner on the Groom VOR. You hear it by the ET Highway, not at the border.

There are a few gravel spots by the ET highway that people use to observe the airspace if they don't want to deal with the Power Line Overlook.

The side of Papoose Mountain Lazar decided to say S-4 was located is a poor location for a secret base. Bob probably didn't know there are homes on Mt Charleston that face east. There is a camp ground on Charleston that can see the S-4 airspace too. Also there is a "youth camp" on Angel Peak. The camp is nearly as high as Tikaboo. You can see the light from Tikaboo. Lastly there is considerable commercial air traffic that can view the supposed S-4 location. I also left out the Bonanza Peak hiking trail.

Route 95 is the road from Vegas to Reno. It is very busy. You just can't do anything very secret in the immediate area. Reading Peter Merlin's "Area 51" book, it turns out the EG&G RCS was at Indian Springs. Clearly that would never do for testing in secret.

Bob would have done better to pretend the base was on the other side of Papoose, that is, make it more of a part of Groom Lake.

As an aside, a rumor that stood for a long time was the base in Area 19. All that was known were power lines headed out there. It was never on the NTS tour. Alas, the NTD showed up IIRC on the Terraserver (predecessor to Google Earth) and nothing was seen there. But it is a hard place to view from hillsides or a plane.

To do a decent scam, it would take much more planning than Lazar put into it.
