I felt that this would be a compelling topic to comment on considering the level of justice that is meted out on a daily basis by various justice systems throughout the world. When a corporation or an industry has a genuine grievance; they should be given the light of day to air their case. However, when stealing intellectual property grants you a possible 50 year sentence compared to the life sentences that are meted out for the various monsters(which society created) and scum who kill, rape, maim and cause havoc; I believe that justice is only an empty word. Also, for your consideration.Megaupload founder faces 50 years.

Let's have a nice little debate about the rights or wrongs about this and please play nice.

They already sentenced him? How come murderers, rapists, and child molesters have to wait years for a trial to get the usual slap on the wrist? This country is so FUBAR'd, beyond surrealistic nightmare levels.

Seriously... did he already get a conviction this fast? I've been busy so I'm trying to play catch up on this topic.

Not just yet as they are trying to extradite him from New Zealand but that's the sentence that's been floating about the various news stories that I've read. To be honest, it feels like the media have already made their mind up that he's guilty as charged.

Just read an article where a guy sexually assaulted a 10 year old boy. He was chased down, caught and, in addition to the sexual assault he had tons of child porn on his blackberry. Sentence: 2 years! Probably will be out in 10 months for "good behaviour." Who did the greater crime? Our justice system is out of touch. We really need to reconsider what a serious crime is.

Just in case people fear that I've cherry picked this particular comparison; I'd just like to point out that the fact is that I cannot recall any murderer in Scotland like Peter Tobin who killed and sexually assaulted 3 young women that we know of being sentenced to more than 30 years. I just think it's very interesting that intellectual property is somehow more valuable than a life.

Well its a telling sign of what means more to TPTB and to the public in general.

We care more about the money game then we do REAL human issues and crimes.

They are pushing for extradition and are pushing for the 50 year sentence.

Whether or not they will be successful is down to the jury I guess.

To be fair though, in the UK sentencing for murder is generally 30 years while in America, first degree murder can net you 150 years in prison.

They go way over the top when it comes to sentencing there.

I don't have strong feelings on this, but you should know he is not looking at 50 years for copyright violations.

He is being charged with racketeering, money laundering, conspiracy, and two different copyright infringement counts. The maximum sentence for all of them added together is 50 years. (Or more, it gets a little fuzzy, but the racketeering and money laundering are up to 20 each.) The copyright infringements appear to be 5 years each.

Kim Dotcom - Megaupload Indictment It's 72 pages and gets as boring as can be, but the charges are on page 1.
